Do you mix your own blends?
I like the taste of Prince Albert blended with Carter Hall at a 50/50 ratio. They're both quite similar so it's a subtle difference, but one I can taste.
Today I mixed my remaining HH Mature Virginia with the PA/CH blend to make a bowl full and am really impressed with the results. When My HH order arrives, I'm going to pre-mix more to have on hand. 25% PA 25% CH 50% HH What combo blends do you guys like? |

Re: Do you mix your own blends?
I blend flakes, when I roll out some to smoke, there is always a little left. I put it into an emply tin. In a few weeks I have a mixture of IRC VA Flake, 1792 and Bracken Flake and whatever else I have been smoking.

Re: Do you mix your own blends?
I've found a cigar shop called Satin Jack's Cigar Room in Lafayette, NJ where they have some pipes and tobacco (no tins) but don't really seem to have a "pipe guy". The owner mentioned that he would be glad to help make my own blends from their supply. Once I really get to know how different tobaccos taste and behave I will definitely take advantage of that.

Re: Do you mix your own blends?
The only attempt at blending I've made was in an effort to come up with something I could smoke out of tobacco I didn't like. The only thing close to a success was mixing three parts AJ's VaPer with one part MacBaren Black Ambrosia. Kind of made a bland nothing that I could get down if I was desperate. Not exactly stellar examples of the blending art...

Re: Do you mix your own blends?
I actually mixed up some yesterday... About 80% McC's 2010, and 20% McC's Blending Latakia. I'm going to let it sit in the jar for a week or two before I try smoking it though, so can't tell ya how it's gunna be. But I can't really imagine it being bad....?

Re: Do you mix your own blends?
The only thing I've tried mixing before is 1792 with some Velvet drugstore stuff. I actually really liked it, it mellowed out the 1792 while adding some of the nuttiness of the Burley.

Re: Do you mix your own blends?
Once I mixed some old nasty tobaccos I had together into a frankintobacco. I believe it was some sir walter raleigh, altadis irish creme, and captain black gold. All crap I bought when I first started pipe smoking. I didn't dare try that ungodly mixture though. It smelled like a drunk leprechaun had thrown up on a pile of sugar and molasses. Yuck

Re: Do you mix your own blends?
Once I loaded a flake of FVF and and St. James Flake together for just a touch of perique. Kind of like ordering a half and half (half pint Guinness, half pint harp), you're just sort of ruining both halves. Might as well smoke two different bowls.

Re: Do you mix your own blends?
I am sort of getting into Virginias this summer and just opened a tin of J.F. Germains Brown Flake that I had in storage. A strong (Nic)but smooth tasting tobacco that is in the dark earthy side of things in the Virginia spectrum. I decided to add a little bright virginia to it to get a fuller spectrum so i went half half with McClelland's 2010 and the result is a very rich full tasting blend with a nice tang but with a good woody body. Virginia smokers tell me what you think.

just about all I've done is add some perique to a batch of haunted bookshop, turned out pretty well, actually.

Re: Do you mix your own blends?
I cut out the Carter Hall this time so I don't have to open another tub and went with 50% Prince Albert and 50% Mac Baren HH Mature Virginia. I really like this. I get the creaminess I like from the burley and an added peppery/stout Virginia kick. I mixed up a small batch to keep on my table for frequent smoking pleasure.
