Well I didnt know this about the fake perique. If any of my puff brothers would like the real deal just shoot me a PM. I'll make a special trip up the road to see Mr. Percy.
I just mixed some perique i had been aging the last 3 years with McCranies red ribbon and the stuff is absolutely delicious. |

Re: What type of tobacco do you consider to be endangered?
My understanding is that there is actually plenty of genuine perique on the market due to D&R's investment in the industry, and that they have stabilized the supply of perique for some time and created greater incentive for the farmers by ensuring high prices for their crops. Sante Fe is a large buyer and they purchase perique from Percy's farm (it is not entirely clear whether any of his perique goes anywhere else), but there are other farmers as well, and due to the small scale of the pipe tobacco industry and the small amount of perique in most blends, there is no problem getting the real thing.
More to the point, if few (if any) amongst us can actually discern the difference between St. James Parish Perique and green river burley (if any is actually being used in any of the popular perique blends), then why do we care? I've never read anything to suggest that green river burley is inferior somehow, so as long as what I'm smoking tastes good and provides a sensory experience that I associate with perique, I'm pretty much okay with wherever it comes from. |

I'd put 1972 on the endangered species list. Tonquin, as an additive, just can't last.

is it wierd that I had a "bad" dream that perique was banned?

You're not the first who felt that way after a bowlful of 1792.
