Perique in Rattray's blends???

Ok, supposedly it's been discussed before. K&K insists there is perique in Hal O' The Wynd. I've never tasted it in the original blends and I don't taste it now. But perique in Brown Clunee, Black Virginia and Dark Fragrant? I don't think so! Anyone smoke those since they started being made by K&K? I've smoked a recent tin of BV and didn't notice any perique. Rattray's mentioned a lot of different tobaccos in their old brochures and never once did I see any perique mentioned as a component tobacco in any of their blends.

Anyone know the story here?

I've wondered that about Hal as well. If there's any perique in there, it's maybe like perique farted into the tin just before it was closed. It smokes and looks like VA.

I love HoTW

I love VaPers

I love good Virginias

HoTW never came across as anything but one of the best Va's.

K&K's website says it has Perique.

I'd smoke it if they now claimed that it contained squid!

;-p

I'm wondering if we can trust K&K's descriptions.

If perique farted into Hal O' The Wynd, then it farted outside the can in the other three and they waved the cans into the breeze. I don't think Rattray ever used perique and I don't think K&K does, either... at least not in Rattrays blends.

Dan, I've often noticed maybe a touch of perique in the finish of the bowl but never really thought anything of it until getting involved in a thread like this on SF. I looked in the tobacco and found some very small dark brown/black flecks in it. I believe their claims

I agree with the Mad 'un. I always found HOTW to have a touch of a "zing" to it. Not a full blown perique punch, but just a whiff. Its possible they are using one of the perique-like-clones that are grown elsewhere. And/or just minute quantities of the stuff.

Ok, I guess I'm missing it but if others have noticed, so be it. Are you both referring just to HOTW or have you noticed it in their other VA's... Black Virginia, Dark Fragrant, Brown Clunee, Marlin Flake, Old Gowrie? I may have subconsciously noticed something in HOTW but I recently finished tins of OG and BV and totally missed any perique essence. I have an aged tin of BC that I'll be popping sometime this summer so I'll pay more attention.

I've only had two Rattrays so far, HOTW (few tons) and Ol' Gowrie (few bowls). I didn't care much for OG, I found it a wimpier version of HOTW, but then again I only had a few bowls of it, not enough to get a full handle on its flavor.

I'm only talking about Hal o'. I've tried OG and thought it was absolutely nasty. These are the only two Rattray blends I've tried other than Red Rapparee

Generally if they say it's in there then it usually is, I'm just finishing off a tin of Marlin Flake which is my fav from Rattray, nice flake, it is in there and you can just about taste it, it adds depth to the VA's, it's subtle stuff, but it works.

I'll send you some Brown Clunee when I crack the tin. As Puffs said, OG is a wimpier version of HOTW - BC is wimpier still.

Hmm... maybe sending you some BC when you thought OG was "absolutely nasty" is like offering you a second helping of shit stew. I'll send you some if you want to try it - how's that?

Agreed. The frilly prose is questionable in some blends but if they say it contains perique, I'd think it would. So you taste it as well? Ok, it must be my taste buds at fault then. Thanks for the update.

You notice it more when you've just smoked a straight VA without any, then you can detect the difference better. Marlin Flake is a superb blending of Perq and VA...but it ain't like Kajun Kake (another great VaPer) where you can really taste the perq.

I'll try it. Everyone says OG tastes like Hal O' but I don't taste the similarity: red VAs vs dark stoved VAs. I'll be happy to try Brown Clunee. Thanks for the offer Dan
