Cool 1st pipe smoke! WA. state

First off I would like to say hello and thank you all for the info I have found on this site.

I took about a 900 mile motorcycle trip with the girlfriend and her family to do some clamming in Birch Bay near Bellingham, WA. last week.
On one of our stops I pull off my helmet and smell that wonderful aroma of a freshly lit pipe! I am a long
time cigarette and occasional cigar smoker but have never tried a pipe, so when I came back home I
got on the net and started researching the art of pipe smoking. Lucky for me I stumbled onto this site right away. Hrmmm theres alot more to it then buying a pipe & tobacco and lighting up I soon found. I spent 2 days just reading this forum and a few other sites I ran into.

I finally went to a tobacco shop and found a corncob and asked for the vendor for some Prince Albert but all they had was the giant $32 can available so I grabbed a Borkum Riff Cherry Cavendish the vendor recommended. I went to a nearby beach and found picnic table loaded the bowl tamping ever so gently with my czech tool and filled her to the top and lit my cob. It was pleasant puffing away that 1st bowl after about 10 relights with my stick matches lol. I have to say The flavor didn't blow me away but hell I am not a big cherry flavor fan anyways.

I have since picked up a cheap $30 Calebresi Briar and some Captain Black White, Half & Half and 3 local pipe shop house blends called Jubilee (aromatic), Contentment (aromatic), and my 1st Virginian they call Mallon Street. So far I have smoked Captains the most and enjoy the smell and taste but that might change after puffing a bowl of Mallon Street.... Wow was it tasty and what a smell!

I am still researching about my newest hobby and having a blast with it.

Re: 1st pipe smoke! WA. state

Welcome my friend, to the wonderful world that is pipe smoking!

You come to the pipe smoking world a bit late for this state, unfortunately.. Legislation has just been passed (as of july 25th) prohibiting ordering tobacco online Though Seattle and Portland both have some amazing some shops, from what I've heard.

TobaccoReviews.com is an amazing website when trying to decide what new tobacco to try.. also, people around the forums here have amazing recommendations! Your cob is a great pipe to start with!

Welcome to the fraternity of the pipe!

I don't understand why someone would recommend Borkum Riff Cherry Cavendish to someone who was interested in Prince Albert, but it sounds like it didn't do any harm.

What about the "Little Brown Smoke Shop" in Yakima? I never dealt with them but they carry all the popular tin blends you read about here along with a decent selection of Savinelli pipes (of the few pipe mfgs they list). They claim to have a retail store. Seeing you are in Spokane, it would make a damn nice day cruise on the bike! Directions are in their website.

Re: 1st pipe smoke! WA. state

Most of the larger Indian Reservations in WA state have a smoke shop, but I agree that Lil' Brown is probably one of the best and has good prices.

Yeah it wasn't a pipe shop just a tobacco shop so I don't think the vendor knew any more about pipe smoking than me but they did have a cob

Now that is a huge bummer because I have already found a few samplers online I wanted to purchase of about 5 - 2oz bags

That sounds well worth the trip. I am actually headed to Newport, OR. in the morning for a few days but will try to make is there real soon. I will also try the indian reservations as well but not sure if those places stock many pipe tobacco's???

Thx for the warm welcome and helpful responses all! I am sure I will have questions in the future but trying to weed through all the posts on this forum for as many answers I can.
