Dad's Ashtray

My sister called me on Sunday to tell me that she and my brother-in-law were stopping over and that she had something for me. Ironically, just last Friday my wife told my sister that I had become a pipe smoker. So I am sitting out on my back patio and here comes my sister, with a bag in her hand. She hands me the bag and says that she wants me to have this.

I can't wait to see what is inside. So I reach inside of the bag and what do I find but my Dad's pipe ashtray! You see my Dad died when I was 19, some 28 years ago. When I saw the ashtray I started crying and so did my sister. My sister told me that she bought my Dad this oak ashtry with attached oak pipe holder when she was in high school which makes it 45 years old.

My sister said that the ashtray was the only thing that she had of my Dads' but that when my wife told her of my pipe smoking, she thought I should have it.

I am so honored to now be using my Dad's pipe ashtray. I vividly remember him with his pipe and using this very nice oak with orange glass insert ashtray. It still has the original cork tamp in the middle of the ashtray.

Using his pipe ashtray seems like a good way to connect to a father you didn't get a chance to really know.. like somehow he's with you, enjoying your favorite baccy right alongside you..

it would be interesting to see a picture of this ashtray
