Starting up again after a month: but all smokes taste bad

I quit smoking for about a month. I boxed-up my pipes up and stored my tobacco in mason jars. I've had about 5 smokes but they all taste like cheap cigars. I only get a hint of the deliciousness that I remember.

What is up? I've tried 2015, Haddo's, St. James, Solani 633...

Could my pipes (I only have 5) have turned funky in a month? Any ideas?

Are you on any new medications? Hydrocodone kills my taste

Nope - everything is the same. The mason jars weren't sterilized or anything, but could that have fouled the tobacco in that amount of time? This is really weird.

Try cleaning the pipes, use a sweetner/vodka and let 'em dry for a couple of days. "Boxing up" pipes may have caused them to pickle in the stinky sauce within. Always store pipes where they are ventilated. Pick up a new cob, try it out.

Follow up: I cleaned them with Everclear (Pure Grain Alcohol), pipe cleaners and Q Tips. The flavor is back.

I think, as you suggested, the problem was boxing-up the pipes while they were still relatively moist.

Thanks!

Therefore, to err is human - to air (pipes), divine!

Or, as Alan Ginsberg would put it: I saw the best pipes of my generation destroyed by moisture, starving hysterically damp, dragging themselves through the storage box looking for a friendly pipe cleaner...

Great poem!

"...pipesters who hiccuped endlessly trying to clean the gurgle but wound up with a mouthful behind the bowl of Turkish tobacco when a blond and naked Dunhill Root Briar came to pierce them with a white dot..."
