just thought I'd say hi and post my new acquisitions
Just posted in the new puffer forum
Quote:
I'd post links to the two new puffers I've got on the way but I was just made aware I need 30 posts so here's a description: 1. Erick Nording Estate(ebay Item# 350233952849) 2. Savinelli Roma (320 KS) (6mm) which is a Rusticated Author shape The pipes I currently have: 1. Erick Nording OCASO Freehand 2. Stanwell Majestic 185 (Smooth Bent Apple) 3. Bjarne Viking Classic Blast Acorn 4. Barling(post trans) Smooth Bent Billiard System(Similar to a Peterson System) 5. Lorenzo Spitfire Smooth Bent Billiard Tan in color(My first pipe and still a excellent puffer )6. Albertson 505 I don't even know what to call this little guy. It was my Grandfather's and has nice teeth impressions, plenty of stem oxidation and plenty dings dent's and scrapes but it's great for a short puff break. 7. And last but not least my good ol' Cob! I also have a box of pipes my Grand father gave to me that has about 13 pipes in it. They all need some serious restoration work. Probably the best thing in there is about 3 or 4 Stanwell's. I'm still up in the air as to whether or not I want to restore them or send them out. Thats all for now. Scott |

Re: just thought I'd say hi and post my new acquisitions
Welcome. A nice selection you have there. I use to have a Sav Roma...a nice pipe as I remember. And I'm a big fan of Stanwell pipes, so I'd be cleaning my pappy's pipes today if I were you...but that's just me.
Have fun! |

Re: just thought I'd say hi and post my new acquisitions
Kevin, I'd clean up "Pappy's Pipes", but they are in real bad shape. They've got the mega thick rock hard cake, the rim even has cake
In about 27 posts the pics will come up, as you need 30 to post pics(dang spammers) Scott |

Re: just thought I'd say hi and post my new acquisitions
Scott,
Here are a couple of websites that I used to get started cleaning estate pipes... Refurbishing Estate Pipes @ The Virtual Smoking Lounge Seattle Pipe Club I've found the retort to not always be necessary. Many times I just soak the bit in denatured alcohol and scrub the inside with a pipe brush. A Castleford reamer removes the cake from the inside of the bowl with a little fine grit sandpaper to touch things up, and a pipe nail and toothbrush cleans up the rim. As for the bite marks, I just throw a rubber pipe bit on the end and it looks like new. |

Re: just thought I'd say hi and post my new acquisitions
Kevin,
Thanks for the links. Now for the stupid question, what do you mean my "retort"? I cleaned up one of Pappy's Stanwell's last night, a Design Choice 880. I started with packing the bowl with cotton balls and topped it off with Jonnie Walker Red and let it soak for a few days in hopes of softening the cake. Then I took the Dremel with the sanding drum to it as the cake was over a 1/4" thick ) to take the cake down to almost nothing. Then I swabbed the bowl/shank/stem with more JW Red to remove an left over crud. then I lightly sanded the heavy oxidation off the stem with some 600 grit paper then hit the rim a bit. The rim is still dark but looks loads better(character right ). I also used the proper sized drill bit to hand ream the vent hole. The final step was putting a felt wheel on the dremel and lightly buffed the whole pipe to bring back some of the shine. As for the teeth marks, I've got a bunch of rubber bits on the way right now from smokingpipes.com. I figured this would be a good pipe to experiment with because there is a nice gouge on the top of the pipe so if I messed up it wasn't a total loss. This moring I packed it up with some Carter Hall and I'm halfway through the first bowl and she's smoking beutifully. No real ghosts just a oldish taste every once in awhile which I beleive should go away after a few bowls. Scott |

well, I now have my two new puffers and have smoked both of them. Very lovely puffers. I'll start a new thread with pics of my collection when I finally hit the 30 post mark.
