Interesting discovery on aromatic vs non-aromatic room note
I've recently been sampling some aromatic pipe tobaccos, some by choice and some because I've received free samples. I usually smoke in my house - in the "man cave". Not being much of an aromatic man as a rule, I only recently noticed that the room note of an aromatic, while really nice as the pipe is being smoked, becomes really nasty shortly after the pipe goes out. Whereas a straight VA or perique blend leaves a clean scent in the room after the smoke is over, the smell of an aromatic is, ironically, kind of nasty and overbearingly foul. My opinion only, of course.
Anyone else notice this? Those who smoke aromatics to please others may ultimately be doing them a disservice. |

Re: Interesting discovery on aromatic vs non-aromatic room note
I'm not really surprised to hear that Dan. I've found that the few aros I've smoked don't have the pleasant flavor when drawing through an unlit pipe and some have a very small temperature range at which they smoke well. Being single pipe smoking for me is all about the taste, not the aroma (that's what I use Febreez for) and aside from the short period of time it took me to figure out I wasn't tasting the name on the label, I've pretty much steered clear of aromatics.

Re: Interesting discovery on aromatic vs non-aromatic room note
I have just a few aromatics Trout Stream and I can't remember the names of the other. Every once and a while I will give one a try, I never enjoy the smoke. On the other hand, I will smoke 1792 or Bracken Flake and REALLY enjoy what I am smoking.
BTW What is Squardron Leader like? |
