Does Macbaren Navy Flake contain alcohol?

Hey everyone,
I was wondering...does MB Navy Flake contain any alky? Navy flake has become such an ubiquitous word that it doens't mean much of anything anymore.

Appreciate your thoughts on this...

It might have rum in it since many navy blends do. I don't smoke it so I can't say for sure.

Mac Baren's description of the development of Navy Flake doesn't mention alcohol, though it does have Cavendish, which often contains alcohol: Mac Baren - Navy Flake

mac barens website says that they use alcohol as a medium for the flavorings in all their tobaccos, however it is supposed to evaporate.

Re: Does Macbaren Navy Flake contain alcohol?

Cavendish, navy flake and rum go together historically and plenty reviewers talk about a "hint of rum" in this and that cavendish or "navy flake" blend. My nose says "hint of rum" with many but MacB Navy Flake isn't one.

The word "Navy" on a tobacco blend historically meant that the tobacco was stored in old rum barrels, and the tobacco would pick up the rum scent and flavor. But no actual rum (liquid) was added. I don't know for sure, but I would guess that blenders expand on that nowadays and add actual rum to their Navy blends.

Re: Does Macbaren Navy Flake contain alcohol?

They do say they use Rum, however that doesn't mean it contains any alcohol by the time you put it in your pipe. I'd be very surprised if there was actually any 'alcohol' reading in a chemical lab test. Blenders use whiskey or rum for adding flavor and not adding alcohol. I wouldn't worry.... you're still good for Sunday school or Friday mosque!

It tastes so good, there could be some "magic" in it too.

The flavor industry is highly secretive. The look and the taste of what we smoke or eat now are frequently deceiving -- by design. IMO

Hell'o

I just ordered a 100gr tin of MB Navy Flake, and i just can't wait. It's my first burley blend and im quite exited to try it, a bit worried abou tongue bite. Any comments on how to avoid tongue bite with MB blends, i had a pouch of MB harmony and it did indeed bite quite a bit.

All MacBitten blends should be allowed to (a) age in the tin; (b) rest AFTER popping tin; and (c) dried sufficiently before ignition.

MB Navy Flake tastes exquisite after a year (or more) of aging. Granted, you probably don't want to wait around that long, but give it as much time as you can spare to settle down.

Always let it sit for AT LEAST 2 WEEKS in the tin after you pop the seal (after closing it back up of course). Your tongue will thank you.

Damn! I shall keep it hidden and safe as long as i can. How about my other new baccy, MB's Latakia Blend? Does it also need aging, sitting and drying?

I have just discovered latakia and i think i kida like it, i have been smoking pipes only for a 9 months so i really haven't had that much time to try different blends and types. I really like virginias and va-pers, SGFVF, Marlin Flake and solani 633 being favourites.

And now i have to Mac Barens on my hands..
