New pipe smoker, need help!!

I recently bought a cheap corncob pipe and 2 ounces of a cherry and vanilla. They smell amazing but when i smoke them i can barely if not at all taste the flavors. it kind of taste like the smell of an old ashtray. I dont want these few times to stop me from smoking pipes all together. what could i be doing wrong for me to get this nasty outcome?

Re: New pipe smoker, need help!!

It's not you, it's your tobacco.

Aromatic blends smell nice, but they rarely taste near as good as they smell. If it's a tasty aromatic you want, I'm sure someone more qualified than myself will recommend a few.

Check out TobaccoReviews.com - The largest collection of pipe tobacco reviews on the internet

Browse through some reviews of recommended and highly recommended blends. See if some of the flavors described sound like what you're looking for in a tobacco (campfire-esque, smokey, peppery, blueberry, etc.) This way you could narrow down what sort of blend (Burley, Virginia, English, Aro, Va/per) you might be into.

If you're starting, this is really the best to do. Search, try and try until you have a notion of what you like. From your post, you already know what you don't like.

And when you get a few more posts (and time here) under your belt, visit the WTT/WTS/WTB forum and partake in the noobie trade, you will get mounds of different "premium" baccy to try out.

Re: New pipe smoker, need help!!

About 2 months ago when I first took up the pipe I did almost the exact same thing. What kind of corncob pipe is it, like a cheap no name off ebay or something? Anyway what i'm getting to is you eventually want to get a Missouri Meerschaum Corncob pipe. I started with the Legend model which comes with a filter but you can remove that if you want.

I started with a cheap flavored aromatic and basically I felt like you did about the flavor. I was expecting smoking cherry tobacco would give a taste like I just had a bite of pie. What i've learned in the breif duration of my pipe smoking is that what we are smoking is after all tobacco and its never truly going to be like eating candy... its a much more complex taste.

Try some 'good stuff' like other people mentioned before you give up on it though. Also, RJpuffs where is this WTS/WTB forum you mentioned I looked through all the different boards and there only seemed to be a cigar trading forum is that the one you were talking about?

You need a certain amount of posts before you'll see it; check your 'welcome' message in your private message files-if I remember correctly it tells you how many.

Correct, also some time period before the doors are opened for ya. Patience; read, post, shoot the breeze, puff some baccy - and before you know it, you will have access!

Re: New pipe smoker, need help!!

There's a WTS/WTT/WTB forum? Wow, I guess I didn't read the welcome PM that thoroughly.

I have a few oz of different things on the way from a site that I ordered. The bulk stuff is only about $2.50/oz, so it's not too much $$ to drop to try a few different things.

Re: New pipe smoker, need help!!

Difficult to answer, could be the baccy...Aromatics are just that aromatic...smell great but taste...Well...just not for me. Could be you're smoking to fast...trying to gobble it up, sip the pipe see if that helps. Smoking several bowls without cleaning, that'll do it to. I'm not sure what you're flavor profile is...maybe Aroes aren't for you. Hang around, read some stickys, you've taken the first step by asking.
