Re: best TASTING tobaccos

Keep in mind that the exploration of various tobaccos isn't a chore; it's fun! Try out the sampler route so you can decide what types you prefer (if you can't stand latakia, for instance, you'll eliminate a lot of possibilities right there!), then start exploring. If you avoid the types you don't like, you probably won't get something you just can't stand to smoke, just stuff that you like less than others. Enjoy the exploration in life! The end result is pretty much the same for everyone and lasts a long time...

Ediited to add:

By the way, about those mistakes: Mason jars are your friend! I've recently decided that I really don't like the taste of perique, and I have about 3/4 of a pound of Anniversary Kake in the closet. A waste of money? Nah. Tastes change over time, and by the time I'm ready to try perique again, I'll have nicely aged Anny Kake instead of new stuff. I tell ya, you can't lose!

In the case your tastes don't change, I'd be more than willing to take it off your hands....trade or otherwise!

depends on you.
i talked to an older guy (late 60s) who was walking down the street while i was trimming the yard... he was smoking some drug store cherry blend and obviously has smoked that same blend for years in the same pipe.

I'm planning on giving it another try next summer, so I'm afraid it'll be a long wait!

Re: best TASTING tobaccos

Right now I'm on a VA kick, or at least a Mac Baren VA kick. I still think Mixture Flake is the tastiest damn stuff I've smoked in a long time. I can't figure out what it is . . . the VA's they use? Or is it the touch of their signature Cavendish in it? (Oh, the shame of it. . . one of the guys I hang out with in a weekly pipe group wears a t-shirt that says, "Friends don't let friends smoke aromatics", although I don't know if the little bit of Cavendish they put in it really qualifies as "aromatic".)

Anyways, MF has this slighly creamy, sweet, biscuity taste that lingers on the palette for a long time and encourages me to sip slowly.

you'll come back to the VA/Pers anyway.
I'm yet to try a Va/Per blend, however, you are right, having smoked and enjoyed all tobaccos, I now find myself smoking mainly Virginias...
