Re: Pipes and style
Well, refined means processed, smooth, perfected, made shinny, so yeah, smooth pipes are refined.
Rusticated pipes are rougher, not smooth, not shinny, lacking refinement. lol, that's the spirit. Which pipe matches the best with pijamas? |

Re: Pipes and style
Okay, I can see that. I always thought of smooth pipes as less refined since the few pipers I've known always started with smooth pipes and discovered the rough stuff later.

Re: Pipes and style
I'm curious about others choices concerning styles of pipes; are your collections dominated by straight or curved, smooth or rough (including rusticated and sandblasted) or by any certain shapes? The reason I ask is because I know I tend to get into a comfort zone with things. As an example, one shape that never appealed to me was the prince. It just looked silly to me. Then the cheap pipe lot I won on eBay had a prince and I tried it. I've got to say, it's become one of my favorite pipes, and it's a type I never would have tried without "help".

Re: Pipes and style
At 14 pipes, I own more straights than bents, but about an equal number between smooth and rough pipes. I like all shapes but 4 are billiards. Lately, canadians are the ones catching my eye the most, although next I would like to buy a cutty or zulu.

Re: Pipes and style
when it comes to style i can only speak for my self, i can't smoke my pipes in public without someone asking what exactly am i smokin, hemp prehaps?
In my opinion i don't think my pipes resemble anything like hashpipes, i have few petersons 303s which i usually use. I use casual clothes, something i like to think of as a urban camouflage, something to avoid unnessessary attention. But i just can't help it, almost every time i smoke my pipe in public someone asks me if i smoke drugs. This is really irritating I think i'll have to wait another 20 years to be able to smoke my pipes in public. or i'll have to dress up like i was 20 years older that i am. |

Re: Pipes and style
In savusauna you have enough smoke, it's needless to smoke pipe, savusauna smells quite similar to cyprian latakia!
And there isn't too many savusaunas around, they have the tendecy to burn down. (and this has NOTHING to do with the Finnish tendency to get seriously intoxicated when having a sauna) |

Yes - they are quite special. I probably like Red Raparree for the same reason I like Suomen savusauna.

Re: Pipes and style
Hmm I have to agree with an earlier post about the comments ppl make when Im smoking in public, Ive taken to packing one of my cheapo pipes and bringing it to work with me to smoke outside the back door, word got around my store and shure enough the boss himself decided to come check on me, it was funny though, him being an avid cigar smoker we got into a long conversation about the subject of tobacco. For a while there though I thought they might haul me in to go pee in a cup.

Re: Pipes and style
I've always been into straight pipes. I dont have many bent but I do have a few. Most are 1/4 bent, one is 1/2 and two are full bent.
At 46 no-one gives me funny looks when smoking a pipe in public. I think the younger guys (under 35 or so) get that cuz of the stereotypical mind of most folks these days.

Re: Pipes and style
I'm only concerned about how good pipes smoke rather than look
I like the look of straight pipes and my only savinelli is straight, however I tend to reach for bent pipes more since I like to clench... just more comfortable Same applies to grain here, I smoke balkans ini rustic chimneys, and flakes in smooth, just seems right for me Never thought about how i look with my pipe and whether it suits my appearance.. |
