I would ziplock the tobacco and take wooden matches..I'ts been awhile since I've flown but lighters were a no no.

Re: air travel
Cousin Rat is correct. I have never had issues with tins, but lighters, tampers, etc they dont like. Might even look at getting some tobacco in OK when you go to eleviate all teh hassle.

Re: air travel
I travel by air constantly with my job. I place all tobacco in zip-locked bags and I bring a couple of small boxes of matches as well. I do not bring a tamp as I use my index finger for that
Also I carry on my bags, not that that really matters. |

Re: air travel
Let me know when you'll be in town and perhaps we can get together and have a smoke.

Re: air travel
I've seen some 'TSA approved' containers for lighters. I think they would need to be in checked baggage, of course. Trying to remember where I saw them... smoking-pipes.com, I think.
I fly up to Virginia to visit a good friend at least once a year... and he's partly to blame for me getting into this hobby (he got into cigars, and pointed me here.. but I favor the pipe). When I go up and visit, probably around his birthday next year, I'm gonna plan on getting him a couple inexpensive pipes and some 'baccy, but will bring a couple of my own, and want to bring my kit as well... so I may look into one of those lighter cases. |

Pack everything but lighter in checked bags. Forget the lighter, they'll pick out of your luggage. Just buy a cheapo when you get there. Don't ask me how I know.

Re: air travel
This summer I flew from Europe to the US, and back, carrying pipes, bic lighters, tobacco tins and pipe cleaners in the checked luggage as well as in my carry luggage (czech tool was the only thing to go exclusively on the checked luggage, everything else was "duplicated" on the carry).
No problems whatsoever with the checked luggage. Only problem with the carry luggage was because of pipe cleaners. The guy at the x-ray machine, in Lisbon, was not sure what those metal pieces were, but his supervisor immediatly identified them as "probably the pipe cleaning things". They made me show it to them, nevertheless, but didnīt place any objections. Pipes were never a problem, and they seem to identify them at first glance. They didnīt place any problems with bic lighters, either, although the one in the checked luggage was placed in a outter pocket, just in case they wanted to remove it. |

Re: air travel
I had it recently where my pipe penknife was approved ok in carry-on baggage, but then on another journey they said the blade on the knife was fine but the pointed tool was too pointed. I have a 'no scare-um' pipe tool specially for carry-on trips, basically it's like a Czech tool but half as short.

Re: air travel
Butane lighters are perfectly fine to travel with now. Just to be safe, I took a Bic lighter instead of my Old Boy. No way in hell was I going to give that up if the TSA guy decided to be a prick.
They've eased up on the restrictions recently. When I traveled to Portland in April, I took 4 ziploc baggies with tobacco, 3 pipes, a czech tool, cleaners, and a Bic lighter. There was no problem at all. TSA: Prohibited Items Here ya go. "Common" lighters allowed in carry-on bags, such as Bics. One book of matches are allowed on carry-on. Happy travels. WWhermit ![]()
