Newb pipe purchase and questions

I just made my second newbie pipe purchase - a Kaywoodie Saxon, to go along with my cob. The first two times I smoked the Kaywoodie I got a bit of tobacco in my mouth on the first puff. Is that common? Also, I never worried about taking care of my cob since it was only $5 I could just go buy another (plus I've yet to have a single problem out of it), but I spent $20 on my new one and I was wondering what I should do to take care of it. I know that $20 is not a whole lot, but I'm a poor graduate student with a kid on the way, so money is a little tight. Any thoughts?

Check out this link in the Pipe FAQ/101 sticky. It should help get you started. Lots of other good info in this sticky.

Also, you might want to check out this link. Lots of cool old brochures (etc) for Kaywoodie pipes. Thought you might enjoy.

I still clean my cobs after every use just to get used to the ritual/habit..... just a quick pipe cleaner through the stem and then again into the stem part coming out of the cob. Sometimes a folded cleaner in the bowl to get out any leftover pieces of baccy since we don't need cake in a cob.
Sounds like your starting out great.

I get bits of tobacco through the stem occasionally, depending on the cut. I give the pipe a quick draw before lighting just in case, to get that possibility out of the way early.

Run down to John Dengler's shop and have them help you out, depending on who's working, you'll likely get all kinds of helpful info. They certainly helped me out a lot and are extremely nice people.

Count your blessings. Beats a gob of hot ash or an ember on the last puff.

Relocate the tobak on end of tongue and go, "Ptui" when nobody is watching.
