I have several Doc G's too. I think they're fine. They smoke easy and they don't cost a great deal

Re: Dr Grabow - What's Your Opinion
My first pipe back into the trenches was a Dr. Grabow, and it smokes great. The only problem with it is I had no respect for it (heck, it's one of them Dr. Grabows!) and have smoked all manner of tobaccos in it, and it's gotten to the point that no matter what I smoke in it, it all tastes the same. Maybe if I ream it down real close to the wood I can start over; I don't know. Now, I wouldn't compare it to a top line pipe, for one thing, you can't get a pipe cleaner all the way into it without taking it apart, and I've come to hate that in a pipe. But all in all, in it's price class, I think it's the king.

I got one when I was down in the US to try some stuff in and I still smoke whatever I feel like in it and it smokes great!

Another positive here as well. I have several and all are good smokers.

Re: Dr Grabow - What's Your Opinion
I have a Grand Duke that I smoke while I'm driving, then I don't have to worry about torching the sides, banging it out on my car door, dropping it, or smoking it too hot cause I wanna kill all the other drivers around me.
It smokes pretty dang good for the price, I think everyone should have a "bang-around" pipe. I pretty much just smoke VA's & Burleys through it.

Re: Dr Grabow - What's Your Opinion
The name brings back memories. My very first pipe was a Whitehall Red Dot with a metal stinger. The stinger was great for collecting sludge that I would later slurp into my mouth as I struggled to get smoke through my overpacked pipe (affectionately known as the Ram-n-Cram method of packing). My 2nd pipe was a Grabow. Same problem. Third pipe was an E.A Carey. I convinced myself (with a lot of help from their brochure!) that their papyrate sleeve would solve all my problems. It solved the gurgle but created other issues. Ah, memories!
The recent Grabows I've seen appear fine. A lot of the older ones had a varnished finish, which served to plug the pores in the briar, resulting in a hot nasty smoke. I'd still be afraid of those. But the ones with natural wax finishes should smoke just fine. Why don't I own any? Simple. Too damn small! ![]() |

Re: Dr Grabow - What's Your Opinion
I agree I have a couple I bring to work with me and smoke on my lunch break, u dont have to worry about losing it or banging it up cause they're cheap...
Caution... Smoking pipes at work in America might get u drug tested.

Re: Dr Grabow - What's Your Opinion
Not to be a snob or anything but I regard Grabows almost on a par with cobs with the Grabow nudging past the cob to take the lead. They're way too small and generally unremarkable in appearance.

Re: Dr Grabow - What's Your Opinion
Good point; they are small, or at least the one I have is. That makes it perfect for a lunchtime smoke, but I wouldn't use it when I wanted a long "full smoke".

Re: Dr Grabow - What's Your Opinion
It's no Savinelli but I like my Dr. Grab. As a newbie, I have to (
The Dr. smoked pretty well from the beginning. Since I got it, I smoked about half a pound of PA through it. The surface veneer bubbled a little at first. Maybe I was smoking too fast? But for the price, I don't care. ![]()

Re: Dr Grabow - What's Your Opinion
I had one but lost it somewhere. Never bothered to replace it. It smoked ok when I first got it years ago but after awhile it just seemed to smoke nasty no matter how well I cleaned it. It got pretty darn hot too.
