Cob Recommendation

Good afternoon fellow puffers and pipers,

I've been doing a bit of research on cobs and can't decide which one I should get. I already have two MM Legends but have come to the conclusion that the bowl just isn't big enough. They only seem good for first trying out a tobacco or a short smoke when you don't have time. I know they're cheap and it wouldn't be a bad idea to buy a bunch just to try each out but i'm only interested in purchasing one more cob at the moment. So which one has a nice big bowl and also being able to order it from online is a must (They only seemed to have 2 or 3 different cobs where I usually shop). I've also looked at some threads about cobs and someone listed all the various size dimensions, the difference between the biggest and smallest cob seemed miniscule bowl size wise.... is that true?

See link: Missouri Corn Cob

Look at the bottom 3 - the General, and the two MacArthurs. Nice big bowls.

Re: Cob Recommendation

I wonder each time this topic comes up if it is possible to make a wooden pipe and then line it with a cob insert......

Anyway, you can take a dremel and widen the bore on a cob. The one I did that to didn't really burn any warmer than it had before hand. One with a thick wall would be all the better, but then again that's a hard row to hoe since todays corn are engineered for smaller cobs and higher yield

Re: Cob Recommendation

As far as diameter, the Country Gentlemen has the largest bowl of all the standard cobs.

Re: Cob Recommendation

I second the recommendation for the Country Gentleman I got one of these about a year ago and the thing has a bigger bowl than most of my briar's. You will not be disappointed.

Re: Cob Recommendation

The "MacArthur" should keep ya burning for a couple of hours. My standard cob burns about 45-60 min. on a full loaded bowl and leisurely puffin.

Re: Cob Recommendation

MM makes a freehand with a pretty nice size bowl as well. Should yield a suitable smoke. They can be had from Mars Cigars for a decent price. I am not affiliated with them by the way. Heck, I am not even sure I am affiliated with me.

Where is that coffee...

Re: Cob Recommendation

I think i'll go with the Country Gentleman and see how that goes for now, i'm sure i'll pick up the other styles in the future however. Anyway I'm shooting for around a 30-45 minute smoke. Hopefully will fit the bill, I know everyone smokes at different rates but those with country gents how long does a bowl take you to smoke? Thanks.

Re: Cob Recommendation

It's a good pipe and should last you around 30-40 minutes depending on your smoking style and packing habits. Should be a sound choice for your needs.

Re: Cob Recommendation

That would be right on target for me; my Country Gentleman is usually a 30-35 minute smoke. I'm not sure why, but cobs seem to smoke faster for me than briars; the same sized bowl on a briar would be at least an hour. Maybe it's the size of the shank? I dunno.

This is correct... from the Missouri Meerschaum website:

When the company began production in the 1860's the by-product of any field corn was usable raw material for the making of corn cob pipes. However, over the years through hybridization, the corn has been modified to produce smaller cobs. It was up to the corn cob pipe industry to develop a corn that produced a bigger cob. This job was given to the University of Missouri, who perfected the corn seed that is used today. Missouri Meerschaum owns about 150 acres that is used for growing corn. Sometimes additional acreage is contracted with local farmers.
