Should I Get One?
I'm a cigar smoker who is interested in pipes. It seems like it could be a fun, new experience. Looking up information though, they seem like they can be a lot of trouble. What I really want to know is, is it worth it? What are the advantages of pipe smoking? What makes it so enjoyable? How much effort needs to be put into the pipe as far as $ and care?

$10 bucks for couple of cobs to get started. Cigars always taste like cigars, pipe smoking tastes like tobacco and anything else you can imagine. The pipe is more maintenance but also very user friendly. I think all cigar smokers should have at least one pipe. |

Re: Should I Get One?
Short answer: yes.
Longer answer: Buy a couple of cobs from your local shop, and have them set you up with a few ounces of different tobaccos, learn how to properly pack and maintain it, and see what you like, even if you hate you're not out much money... and I kinda doubt you'll hate it. |

Pick up a few tins of tobacco, from the major groupings, and see if any of them strike your fancy. Between this site and tobaccoreviews.com you should be able to hit the ground running. Good luck. Greg |

Re: Should I Get One?
I'm a cigar smoker that switched over to pipes exclusively about a month ago. The reason: $$$. I can smoke a nice cigar every once in a while on my budget anywhere from $5-25. Or I can buy a $10 tin of baccy and it will last me weeks. I get a lot more smoke for my buck. Plus, I know with a good blend of baccy, I don't have to worry about getting a dog rocket, which seems to happen every now and then even when I buy good cigars.
Consistent good smoke for less moolah.

Re: Should I Get One?
I have become about 60/40 cigars to pipe in the last month. It is an experience that must be tried.
Sitting on my deck with a pipe and a good book is how I relax on the weekends. |

Re: Should I Get One?
GET one! I too tried a pipe for the first time on Friday. Cigars are good, but I find the variance in pipe tobaccos too be much more interesting. I've only got a couple cobs and I've chapped the hell outta my tongue (smoking it too hot I guess), but I'm already hooked. Shopping for a mid-range briar right now!!
And Greg is right....I do feel a little ridiculous smoking the cob pipes. ![]() |

Re: Should I Get One?
Do it. Do it.
I'll add, as a newb, a couple cob pipes are a great start. I'd also look at getting a clay pipe or a meerschaum. You can clean both of those out and smoke other blends in them without your previous blend influencing the flavor. I just got a LePeltier clay pipe last week, and love it! |

Re: Should I Get One?
A pipe is a tiny fraction of the cost of smoking quality cigars. There's a bit of an investment in getting a few pipes at first but once you've done that you can smoke til you're blue in the face. I can buy a 12 ounce bag of tobacco for $20-something and smoke for two months.
The variety of pipe tobacco is just amazing. No comparison to cigars. There's a bit of ritual invovled in smoking a pipe but that's the fun of it. It's not a big deal and becomes instinctive once you get the hang of it. Well worth the little bit of trouble compared to just shoving a stogie in your mouth and lighting it. As said start with a couple cobs and you'll find out if it's for you. They are actually an excellent smoke, rivalling many briar pipes if kept clean.

Re: Should I Get One?
I wouldn't feel foolish smoking a cobb pipe. When I go to pipe night at the cigar shop, most the guys have a few cobb's in there arsenal. I am a cigar smoker of 2.5 years, and a pipe smoker for a month. I smoked my first cigar in a month last night. I did enjoy it, but actually like the pipe more. I enjoy the taste of the tobacco more.
