New pipe smoker saying hello and thank you :)
Hi, I just started smoking a pipe about 2 or 3 weeks ago.
The reasons I decided to start smoking was because I could remember the wonderful smells coming from pipe smokers when i was a child. The hobby just seemed like something I wanted to pick up if only occasionally due to health risks ![]() I had tried and liked cigars in the past, and thought pipe smoking was much more my thing. I found a pipe at my local cigar shop based on the owners recommendation and gave it a whirl. I have really been enjoying it. I am really surprised how relaxing it is and it seems just what i needed. My local cigar shop only seemed to carry a limited selection of pipe tobacco and only what seemed to be the shops local blends, so i had the feeling that some more popular tobaccos out there might be a little better. Then I started watching youtube and came across dubinthedam and PipeFriendCHS's videos. Big shout out to these two for all of the helpful information, and a special thanks to dubinthedam for information about this forum which seems like a nice place for all sorts of information. But anyway due to dubinthedam's recomendations on youtube i ordered me some macbaren vanilla and cream, and a few other macbaren tobaccos (honey and chocolate, plum cake). They should be here on Wednesday and i cant wait to try them out. I do wish that i had gotten a straight pipe first. Mine is not a straight but its not a full bend either. As well the pipe i got seems to be a bit to small to clench comfortably within my teeth. So I'll prob be looking at a straight Peterson pipe or something next. Any recommendations? One final question for you guys is "how do you store your tobacco"? Not for aging but just to keep fresh until you smoke it. At the store they come in these little baggies which i assume is not good enough, and i hear a humidor is not really necessary. I have read around that a glass jar is suitable but i was unsure if you should dump the different types of tobacco into different jars with a humi-pillow or if you should put all the little baggies in one larger jar with a single humi-pillow for the jar. Sorry for all of the text, i just wanted to say hello and thank you ![]() |

Re: New pipe smoker saying hello and thank you :)
A big welcome to the Forum. You'll learn alot here and have fun too, this is a great bunch.
i use Mason Jars to store my tobacco. I have a vinyl pouch that I load my pipe from otherwise it's in the jars so keeps it fresh and sealed. Glad you're enjoying the pipe so far. Relaxation is what a pipe is all about. Experiment with tobaccos til you find what you like of course. Keep it clean and have several so you can let your pipe dry out for a couple days between smokes. Ideally one pipe for each day of the week is perfect. I smoke the same pipe for a day then clean it and put it back in the rack. Once in awhile soak a pipe cleaner in rubbing alcohol and run it through your pipe. Disassemble your pipe to do this and don't let the alcohol get on the outside finish of the pipe. After the alcohol dries out then reassemble the pipe and you're good to go. Also remember don't pull your pipe apart when it's hot. Wait til it cools down first.

Re: New pipe smoker saying hello and thank you :)
Good intro! I'm pretty new myself, so I'm interested in seeing a few of your questions answered.
I bought a LePeltier clay pipe and received it last week. I think it's a great pipe for us beginners, since it's clay, and you can literally wash it out like a dish or a bowl in the sink with hot water, leaving it clean so that when you smoke your next smoke, you won't taste your last smoke! Great for sampling new tobaccos. Once I find a few blends that I like, I'll get a few briar pipes and dedicate one for each blend. |

Welcome and good puffs to you too.
I use mason jars, bail top jars and the original tins to store my tobacco. If I'm going out and need to take some off the jars I use a leather pouch to carry enough for a few hours. I guess you'll get a lot of info on everything about pipe smoking.

Get a couple of regular sized, straight Missouri Meerschaum corncob pipes. They give you great smokes at $5.00/ea while you sort out which briar pipe is right for you. Ask dubinthedam why he didn't make a video about THAT!

Re: New pipe smoker saying hello and thank you :)
Welcome to the pipe, and you really do not need any humidificationiationing with pipe baccy. Its not as fragile as a 'gar. A (real) ziplock will do for a short term storage (days/weeks); and a (real) mason jar will hold it for an eternity as-is without any humi-things. Just wash the jam out of of the jar first

Re: New pipe smoker saying hello and thank you :)
Welcome Michael glad you found us. Good info has already been given....but....I would like to reiterate what Puff said....make sure all the jam is out of the jars, if not, the baccy will stick to the sides and it's a bitch to get out.

Re: New pipe smoker saying hello and thank you :)
Thank you all for all the wonderful information.
I do apologize if i posted on the incorrect forum. I just was looking for pipe information and conversation and came directly here sense i thought the rest of the site was devoted to cigars which really aren't my thing ![]() I'll prob go to wall-mart and pick up a nice large glass jar with the jam already removed! *lol* though jelly flavored tobacco sounds pretty good. The pipe I mentioned about being not so comfortable me is a lorenzo and then something that starts with an S and ends with an RE its rubbed out in the middle so i cant tell. I am not sure. It seems to burn a hot no matter how slow i smoke it and i don't really think it was worth the $60 bux i spent for it at the tobacconist. I have been trying to figure out what it is though if anybody knows. I did order me the straight version of a corn cob pipe which i should get today. It was only $3.75 and i thought it would at least let me see if like the feel of a straight pipe better. I tried to link the picture here but im a new account and it wont let me post images or links. From the picture it doesnt really look like a corn cob. Its listed as a Corn cob Ozark hardwood. I'll have to see what it actually is when i get it. the clay pipes do seem pretty cool too, though i am surprised that you can clean them out in the sink, isn't a good cake desirable for those as well? ![]() |

Re: New pipe smoker saying hello and thank you :)
I picked up some hermetic glass jars at The Container Store here in town. They're nice, but I need to get some bigger ones. I think the biggest one I got, 27oz size, will hold 4oz of tobacco.

Re: New pipe smoker saying hello and thank you :)
Interesting. I went the other way; all my jars are half pint mason jars. I decided I'd rather have several small jars than one big jar, but then I was thinking more of long term storage when I made the choice.
