Virgina
Hello pipe folks. I currently have around a lb of CAO - Treasures of Ireland-GALWAY.
I've seen many of you talk about Virgina tobacco, and I am curious to maybe try some. What is a good brand to try? I like stronger English style tobacco (from what I'd guess and have tried). Are Virginias that much stronger?

They are a subtle flavor, but strong in other good ways

Re: Virgina
To put it simply, Virginias are what the "English" blends use as a base. Its the no-nonsense solid burning background of virtually every blend out there (along with burley, and/or).
VAs tend to burn "hotter" than a latakia/perique/oriental blend, since those condiment baccys are not in there to cool things down. Flavor is generally more subtle (especially when compared to a stinky latakia blend), and VAs must be sipped slowly if one intends to continue to use ones tongue thereafter. Truly enjoyable - I recommend you try Samuel Gawith's Full Viriginia Flake (FVF). Cooler burning than most VAs and more forgiving, and tastes damn good too. Oh yes, try to use a non-ghosted pipe to truly appreciate a VA, a cob or meer will do the trick too.

Plus if you already enjoy cigars, I'd also suggest Bracken Flake & 1792, both are somewhat (relatively) cigar-like.

Re: Virgina
I would recommend staying away from any strong smelling Virgina.

Re: Virgina
Speaking of Virginias, I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that this type of tobacco is where it's at, as far as I'm concerned. I've found several I love and very few I don't like. What would you all consider the "must try" Virginias? So far for me I'd say FVF, HOTW and Opening Night are the best, while Union Square is a bit of a disappointment, and Interlude is one to avoid. But I'll bet you guys know all kinds of great Virginias that I haven't even tried yet; how 'bout sharing your discoveries?

Re: Virgina
I told someone about Stonehaven a few months back, and look what happened!!
Do you really think it's a good idea to let you know about our favorites? JK, of course. If you're into red va blends, I can't get enough of Anniversary Kake at pipesandcigars.com. Considered a VaPer technically, although the perique does play a back seat role in this tobacco. Exquisite. WWhermit ![]()
