Tobacco Temperature
Hello friends,
Simple question here... not sure if theres a simple answer though. Is it bad to keep ones tobacco and pipes in a cold place. I mean it would be between 20 - 60 degrees farenheit throughout the winter and I was wondering if the cold can alter the moisture level or flavor of the tobacco. Also is it ok to keep pipes in that temperature range. The reason I ask is because I smoke in my garage and the heater isn't on most of the time , I like to have all my 'stuff' set up in the garage but it got me thinking about the storage of the pipes and pipe tobacco. oh and if it matters most of my bac is in plastic ziplocs and those ziplocs are in another big zip loc. Thanks!! ![]() |

Re: Tobacco Temperature
You don't want your pipes getting down to twenty degrees. Smoking a bowl in a twenty degree pipe could risk cracks forming, I'm thinking. No clue about the bac.

Re: Tobacco Temperature
I am going to think out loud here since I can't speak from experience on the matter. Temperature will affect the RH of your tobacco, but the cold will probably just make it more dry. Although that might not be the case if it is in a sealed container. I can't imagine cool temperatures being a problem for tobacco until it hits freezing. At that point any moisture in the tabac will freeze, and that would be an issue.
As for the pipes, it is bad for any wood to be subjected to extreme temperature fluctuations, such as freezing, then holding lit tobacco. Also, if you smoke a bowl, building up moisture as you do, if the pipe freezes while moisture is in it (causing expansion), it very well may crack. |

Re: Tobacco Temperature
The main problem with low temp is not the temp itself, but that it is more difficult to maintain appropriate rh at lower temperatures. I'd avoid keeping them at much less than about 60 degrees or so.
