A pipe from First World's Fair US : Columbian Exposition of 1893

I think some may find interest in my pipe.

The pipe was purchased at the First U.S. World's Fair, Columbian Exposition, Chicago, IL, 1893. This is identified on the bottom of the neck with India Ink. In the form of an Indian Chief, his nose holds a Stanhope featuring six photos of Niagara Falls, NY.

I'm looking for any additional information about this pipe. Email me for a link to a webpage with 10 photos of the pipe.

I'm not "TBK1". What is ARFCOM?

I attempted to post the link but the forums stated that you must have at least 30 posts before you can post links.

I wish it wasn't that way but the forums will not allow me to post the link until I've reached 30 posts. I didn't notice this before joining. Sorry.

Is the bowl in the headress and the stem would go in the neck? Im interested in the Stanhope too? Never heard of that but Im interested in how it holds six photos. Any idea what the wood is? doesn't look like briar, but maybe that's my noob-eye

Yes, you are correct about the bowl & the stem. Photo attached.

The Stanhope is essentially a piece of glass that simultaneously holds the photos and acts as a magnifying device. In this case the Stanhope is through the nose, like a piercing. On one side, there are 6 miniature photos, each is labeled underneath. The other side of the glass is curved to allow magnification of the 6 photos. When you hold it up to the light and peer through the curved side, you can focus on each photo individually. We can not get the camera to 'use' the magnification.

I posted this for my father, he's the bee keeper and is also computer illiterate. He likely knows what type of wood it is. I attempted to call him to ask. I'll update when I get a hold of him.

Also you can learn more about Stanhope on wikipedia, search "Stanhope Optical" and it is the first result. Searching simply "Stanhope" returns unrelated results.

He doesn't know for sure but he believes it is mesquite wood. It is quite light.
