GBD Estate: Good buy?

I was recently overcome with the eBay bug and decided to buy a cheapish briar.I admit it was an impulse buy and I managed to bag a Estate GBD for I think around £10 including postage ($15 for my cross Atlantic friends).

This struck me as a good deal but being a newbie to pipe smoking I wasn't sure if I got fleeced and GBD's are awful.

Theres some ghosting from the pipe but nothing a few smokes and cleaning won't deal with, its a reasonable medium to small size bowl and smokes well. (pics can be added if needs be, but may be a bit later 'cos my damn cameras on the blink)

SO... anyone with experience of GBD pipes? pros/cons? and was that an good price for it?

Thanks

Cactus

I have a couple of GBDs
For fifteen bucks, I'd say you got a great deal!

(BTW, pictures are always good)

Re: GBD Estate: Good buy?

Sorry for poor pic quality. Had to use stubborn backup camera

Anyways hope this is enough to show size and state of it.

Any details not seen I can fill in if it would make a big difference to the quality of the pipe (though tbh besides a few teeth marks I can't see any)

That looks sort of like one of the GBD's I have. Mine are good smokers and I would say you got yours
for a very good price

Re: GBD Estate: Good buy?

That is reassuring, because I wasn't sure of the reputation of GBD or the quality of the pipes.
Seems I didn't do too bad and having tried it again the ghosting seems to be fading faster than anticipated.

One thing I have noticed is that the bottom has been flattened, don't know if this was a later modification or how they are produced, this means that it sits nicely and since I'm lacking the pipe racking its pretty handy.

Thanks guys I just had to make sure that I hadn't made an error in buying

I have two GBD's - a Flame Grain and a New Standard - and their both decent pipes. The NS has the annoying habit of smoking wet but I just keep the pipe cleaners handy and it's fine. I honestly have never run up against a bad GBD. And yours is a "sitter". They made lots of sitters (pipes with flat bottoms so they'll sit upright without a pipe stand). Both of my GBD's are sitters.

Nice buy!

Thanks matey, I knew this was THE place to go to. Seems that I didn't make a mistake and because of that my confidence in pipe smoking has been given a boost.

Time for more pipes and more tobacco, lets just hope my wallet can handle it.

Re: GBD Estate: Good buy?

I own 3 or 4 GBD's and I smoke them all the time. Bought them in estate condition and all they needed was some cleaning. And they are excelent smokes.
G.L. Pease is known to own an excelent collection of GBD's.
