No more drug store tobacco?

I was off visiting in another town today and went by their drug store to pick up a pouch of PA. I'd smoked up all I took along with me and wanted some for the trip home. I'd bought tobacco there before but today they had none. Even their pipes were gone. They told me they will no longer carry tobacco products. When I got home I paid a visit to our drug store. They normally only carry two kinds, Sir Walter and Velvet. Both were marked down and they told me that they too will no longer carry tobacco.

Is this the end of Drug Store tobaccos? Only Wally World and the little smoke store now carry it in my town. I may have to stop referring to some blends as DST. What about where you live? Is it still sold in drug stores?

BTW, I bought both tubs of SWR. I figure it will blend well with other stuff I smoke. At $12.50 a tub I couldn't pass it up.

Re: No more drug store tobacco?

I've had a hard time finding it in AZ too. I'm not sure if it is the stores I went to or what but the three stores I checked only one had pipe tobacco and none had cobs or Dr. Grabow's. It might be time to start shopping online. It's not as convenient and shipping can suck but the selections of tobacco are endless and you can usually get free shipping if you place a large order ($100+). It might be best to buy your tobacco every couple of months or even once a year and cellar it.

Re: No more drug store tobacco?

The state of affairs here in Washington is so bad that my best local B&M is, in fact, Rite-Aid. If they get out of the baccy business I'm well and truly screwed.

Does that include cigarettes? If so, I'd have to wonder about their business model. Cigarettes are high-volume, low shelf space money makers.

I'm not a pipe smoker, but the local Walgreens down the street does carry tobacco still.

Um...you do realize that these businesses are making the decision not to carry tobacco on their own, right? In other words, they are making a free market business decision.

Re: No more drug store tobacco?

With times being what they are and with smokers of ANY type being frowned upon more and more, certain companies have chosen to stop carrying tobacco products altogether. As large corporations continue to gobble up the smaller businesses and thereby eliminating the competition, they will force their newly acquired pick-ups to adopt their selling practices regardless of the views of our small and ever decreasing ranks as smokers.

Your best bet is to find a local place that does still resist the corporate giants and that continues to carry tobacco products or to find a good e-tailer and stock up while you can.

Our "rights" as we once knew them are continuing to dwindle, and it may well be that soon we will have to be labeled as outlaws to continue to enjoy out present lifestyles.

Our local drug store never carried cigarettes or cigars. Only pipes and a couple of tobaccos. They've always had super expensive candies behind the counter. The one in the other town carried cigarettes but I didn't see any nor did I ask about cigarettes.

I should have paid more attention while I was at ours and maybe bought a few of the DG pipes if they were on clearance.

Re: No more drug store tobacco?

Here in Alberta, drug stores aren't aloud to sell tobacco as of this year. We have some pretty strict laws on tobacco and heavy taxes too.

Sale of tobacco in certain places prohibited
  • 7.3 No person shall sell tobacco products or offer tobacco products for sale in any of the following places:
    • (a) a health facility in which one or more health professionals regulated under the Health Professions Act or another enactment provide services;
      (b) the campus of a public post-secondary institution under the Post-secondary Learning Act;
      (c) a pharmacy;
      (d) a retail store if
      • (i) a pharmacy is located in the retail store, or
        (ii) customers of the pharmacy can enter the retail store directly or by use of a corridor or area used exclusively to connect the pharmacy with the retail store.

    NOTE: Section 7.3 comes into force January 1, 2009.
