Really stupid question: what is the point of a pipe sock?

The title says it all; I mean, most of us keep our pipes in a rack, right? What am I supposed to do with this sock? Just keep it in the box in the closet with the rest of the junk life has given me? I just cannot seem to throw them out...

DubintheDam mentions in one of his videos that you can use the sock to protect the pipe if you are carrying it with you and want to put the pipe in your pocket.

Absolutely. Smooth-finished pipes get scratched and marred in a pocket. All it takes is a pipe tool, coin, or even the button on the pocket to give the pipe a little ding.

I never thought of that; I've been sticking to cobs away from home to prevent damage (how can you tell if a cob got scratched?).

Wow...I'm now being quoted, I'm impressed some of you remember. But they are ideal for just carrying your pipe around, a leather pipe case does that up a lot a room, I usually throw in a few pipe cleaners. Some people like to store their pipe in them, but that's only when they have too many to smoke.

If you ever sell a pipe, it's nice to have the sock and box.
I use the nice leather ones when I travel.
The rest of em sit in a drawer.

I use a, and don't hate me for this, Chang Feng plastic pipe for all weather smoking (its waterproof and an oddly good smoke).

As for carrying my pipes about I use an old draw string glasses bag, enough room for the pipe a packet of baccy, slim box of matches my pipe tool and a couple of pipe cleaners. Seems to work a treat so far.

I put the pipe in the sock, in the pipe box, in the suitcase when I'm flying. Not that often, heaven knows, but other than hang the socks from the x'mas tree as decorations - there would be no other use for 'em

I don't smoke my pipe at the house much. It is too cold out right now. So I go to the local cigar shop and smoke. I have a Oliva box I have my pipes in when I travel. I like to put the pipes in the sock that way they don't get dinged up and rub against each other.
