Open Tins
I started smoking pipes about two months ago in order to offset the cost of daily cigar smoking. Low and behold it's good stuff. I really enjoy it.
I was wondering about one thing....how many open tins does the average pipe smoker have? Or better yet, how many tins do YOU have? I guess we can average the replies out.....and have an official average. Thanks guys. -Les |

Re: Open Tins
I have four tins and two zip lock baggies that I'm smoking furiously before they dry out, but I'm new to the pipe and I doubt that's average.

Re: Open Tins
I found that I rarely finish a tin before it gets crispy, so the first thing I do is put it in a canning jar. Counting the jarred tins I have nine open right now.

Re: Open Tins
Seven actual tins, about twenty jars. I tend not to finish one purchase before I start the next. And I am still finding out what my preferences are. I am sure once I settle in I will have fewer open at a time.

Re: Open Tins
When I first started I pretty much cracked all my tins open. Wanted to try everything as soon as I got it. I have since quit, and restarted. I now have a little control, and only have about 6 tins open, all of which I smoke fairly regularly. I have a bunch of tins that I'm keeping closed until I've smoked through some of what I've got already.

Re: Open Tins
Right now seven tins (although four of those are in mason jars) plus a handful of baggies of samples from kind board members. Pretty good, as it was ten just a couple of days ago. I would imagine the number will shrink at some point as I decide what I like and quit sampling the field. And while I've had baccy in baggies dry out, I've never had a tin dry out, so I don't worry about it anymore. The only time it gets switched to a mason jar is if I decide it's not working and want to put it away to try at a later date.

Re: Open Tins
I have 6 tins open, 10 baggies open, & 18 jars open. I know, overkill.

Re: Open Tins
15 jars (my regular, everyday stash), one baggie and 3 tins. I don't find it overkill - I prefer to think of it as having available whatever I may be in the mood for at any given time.

Re: Open Tins
I always put my tinned tobacco straight to mason jars. I smoke about 1-3 small bowls a day and that equals about 100gr per month. If i don't jar my baccy it tends to get too dry and the tin aroma isn't what it used to be after few weeks.
I have my VaPer my English and my occasional aromatic in jars and few sample tobaccos in baggies. So i only need 3-4 containers, i always TRY to smoke the whole tin before opening a new one. The urge to open a new one is huge, but i TRY to fight the temptation. This is exactly what i call "pipe zen" I've been smoking pipes about a year now, and i just love it. I have few hundred brands and blends i would like to try and with my smoking rythm it will take me about 20 years to do this. So i try to take it easy and enjoy the ride. |

Re: Open Tins
Thanks for your replies guys. Now I dont feel like such a freak for having 5 blends open. I have a tin of Rattray's Black Mallory, R* 7 Reserve, SG Perfection, Captain Black, and a home blend of 50% Admirals Choice (eww) 25% Captain Black and 25% Black Mallory.
I like the idea of the mason jars, I'm gonna pick some up. I was afraid I had too many open, and that they would dry out. It's just hard for me to not open anything new, for the above is all I have tried. Of course....I want to try them all! Thanks again guys. -Les |

Re: Open Tins
I use jars for my open tins as well. Half pint jars work great for this. I have 7 jars that I am smoking out of.

Re: Open Tins
I really can't see me being able to store any sealed tins. I just have to open them and get a smell of the tobacco. I think I will probably do all of my storage in Mason jars.

That's what I do too. The other day I bought something I knew I wasn't going to smoke for at least a week, but I just had to pop it open and give it a sniff. |
