Refinishing Colored Bowls

I have a couple of pipes on the way that have colored bowls. One is a painted green, the other is a stained blue. Can these be refinished in a more natural color or would the bowls need to be sanded so deep that they would be ruined in the process?

"Most" pipes are stained with alcohol based stain. Use a high octane liquid and it comes right off. However, anyone who paints a pipe BLUE is capable of anything, so all bets are off

The only green pipe I've seen is the Peterson St.Paddy's releases.

The green one is not stained, it's painted. The blue ,however, is a Big Ben that is stained a baby blue. The grain is visible through the stain.

Don't fear the pipes of color! It just adds a bit of whimsy!

Re: Refinishing Colored Bowls

I received the pipes today and I was wrong about the green one, it is stained. The blue Big Ben has some peeling of the clear coat near the rim. Can that finish be sanded off leaving a stained wood finish? The price per pipe was fairly cheap, so I thought these might be good to experiment with.
