First Pipe

As some of you may know, I smoked my first cigar this weekend. A neighbor brought it over. I enjoyed it. Went to my local B&M today to pick up a few cigars of my own for this weekend. Came out with 2 cigars, a pipe, and some pipe tobacco.

Told the owner of the place I was new to it all, he pointed me to two good beginner cigars, a Savinelli Duca Carlo pipe, and some tobaccos to try.

I am not allowed to post pics yet but it looks just like this:

Now I just have to figure out how to use it!

What have I gotten myself into?

Re: First Pipe

While the Savenelli is a very fine pipe(I have a few), with your noob status might I suggest you going out and getting a corn cob pipe before you start throwing every tobacco under the sun in the Sav?

The corn cob will be much more forgiving of repeated smoking, changing from one blend to another, and will tend to run a little cooler than a briar will for a new pipester who may not yet have the best technique...yet.

I only mention this from experience. In fact my 5 dollar cob is one of the best pipe related purchases I have ever made.

It's probably better that you don't know but the phrase "Both feet in the trough" comes to mind.

Not a bad idea. I will probably go out and do that.

So the owner's recommendation for the Savinelli was a good one?

Re: First Pipe

Savinelli's are great pipes and well renown... but for a beginner it may not be the best idea to "trial and error" on it, which you will be doing alot of as a newb.

Think of it like this: you wouldn't go out and buy the most expensive and well-spoken-of wine for your first ever experience with wine, would you? Nah, you have to develop the technique, the touch, the palette, the rhythm, etc.

Re: First Pipe

I didn't "go cob" - I read up on breaking in a new pipe and started out with a meerschaum-lined pipe and then a few weeks later got a Peterson 303. Quality makes a huge difference.

I wonder if I made a mistake. I was breaking in the Peterson with Peterson's Sherlock Holmes, but then I tried a couple of bowls with "Sweet Killarney" - and then went back to Sherlock Holmes. This weekend I'm going to get some Squadron Leader and Hal o' the wynd.

(I need more pipes )

Re: First Pipe

Whenever I head over to Idaho (30 minutes away) To buy cheaper tobacco I pick up an mm cob for $2.99. Can't beat that price! Most of the other places Charge $5.99 which is still cheap considering the quality of smoke you get from the ole trusty cob.

Re: First Pipe

Check out this video from Dubinthedam. It will help you immensely in maintaining your bowl and avoiding relights. I have been smoking now for a few months but I picked up some pointers from this video that are generally left out of most beginner's tutorials. Since I've started to maintain my bowl like Dub shows, I rarely if ever have a relight and the smoking experience in general has been greatly enhanced.
