OK Guys, I need some lessons here.

Still a bit confused on which tobaccos I can smoke out of the same pipe and which should not be mixed. I am going to give you my list of tobaccos (with a bit more info of course) and ask if you would be kind enough to help me understand which ones can be smoked with the same pipes.

TIA

1: Christmas Cheer - Virginia/???
2: McClelland 3Oaks - Virginia/Oriental/Latakia
3: Esoterica Margate - ???
4: Rattray's HOTW - Virginia/???
5: G.L. Pease Haddo's delight - Virginia/Perique/Cavendish
6: Frog Morton - ???
7: Esoterica Penzance - Virginia/Oriental/Latakia
8: MacBaren Navy Flake - Burley/Virginia/Cavendish

So which of these could I group together. For instance, can I smoke the Navy Flake in the same pipe as I smoke the HOTW in?

Just Virginian. Very simple and probably won't ghost. Could be paired with HOTW without problems.

2: McClelland 3Oaks - Virginia/Oriental/Latakia
Latakia is something my palate is very sensitive to. So, make sure you dedicate an "english" pipe for those blends that contain Latakia. I don't smoke English so i'm not good at distinguishing between blends

3: Esoterica Margate - ???
Again, Latakia. Could work with 3Oaks

4: Rattray's HOTW - Virginia/???
Pretty straight Virginian, will do fine with Christmas Cheer

5: G.L. Pease Haddo's delight - Virginia/Perique/Cavendish
Perique can sometimes leave it's pepperness behind, so i'd recommend dedicating a pipe to VAPER, separate from your straight Virginians

6: Frog Morton - ???
Latakia. But very mild and smooth. Could get away with this in any pipe, but like i said, personally i'm very sensitive to Latakia so i'd be able to detect the ghost.

7: Esoterica Penzance - Virginia/Oriental/Latakia
Could be grouped with Frog Morton. Great tobacco and very full flavor. If you like it as much as i do, you might dedicate a single pipe to this blend and this one alone.

8: MacBaren Navy Flake - Burley/Virginia/Cavendish
A very sweet and "tarty" tobacco from my experience. This should be dedicated to an aromatic pipe, but perhaps a sweet pipe. For example, MacB Vanilla Creme might suffere a little bit from the ghost of Navy Flake because Navy Flake is sweet while MacB is much more creamy. So maybe have 2 aromatic pipes: one for sweeter baccy (Devil's Holiday, Blue Note, Navy Flake) and one for creamy or less sweet (Vanilla Creme, Chocolate, etc.)
Hope that helps

Re: OK Guys, I need some lessons here.

So what gives the navy Flake the sweetness? Is it the Burley or the Cavendish. If i remember correctly it seems that about all of the drug store aromatics are Cavendish.

Not trying to be a pest but just trying to learn and keep from screwing up my smoking.

You're not a pest, you're eager to learn. And once you do, you'll be content. Everyone here is more than willing to impart their inquiries to you because we all started out somewhere (most likely similar to you).

Navy Flake, from my understanding, is flavored with rum. This is where it's sweetness comes from, coupled with the natural sugar content of Virginians probably as well. But i've smoked this blend a few times and it had a very sweet and "tarty" flavor to me that i didn't quite understand. My palate wasn't really well developed back when i tried it and things may have changed but that's just been my experience with it.

I read in an earlier forum that any tobacco with 'navy' in the name is likely cased with rum. Sailors...hmph!

Re: OK Guys, I need some lessons here.

If you get a few MM cobs, it won't matter what you smoke or in which one as they are far less picky than briars. Just wipe the inside of the bowl out with a wadded up paper towel after every smoke and you'll be fine.

On that same note, throw away the little paper filter that they come with.... Far better smoke without 'em.

Welcome to the "Other Side"!!

Re: OK Guys, I need some lessons here.

1 pipe for latakia,
1 pipe for perique,
1 pipe for straight virginia's,
1 pipe for burley,
1 pipe for aromatics,

any blend with latakia (example: a blend with virginia/burley/perique/latakia) to the latakia pipe.
MacB's Navy flake is a tricky one to classify... maybe another pipe for lightly cased virginia blends.

+1

I'd also like to add that after a while you're gonna want a few pipes for your favorite types of tobaccos, for example I have a few pipes dedicated to VA's & a few dedicated to VA/Pers.

I'm slightly less picky though, as I've been known to smoke Burley out of my Virginia pipes from time to time.

+2
what he said

At a pinch, straight VAs should have their own untainted bowl, as their flavors are delicate. Perique its own. Latakia its own. Any aero (fruit/vegetable smelling baccy) its own. As you try more blends, you will find that a certain pipe just "works" with a certain blend, so by all means dedicate that puppy to that chow.

Re: OK Guys, I need some lessons here.

I smoke MacBaren Plumcake Navy Cut. I only smoke this in one pipe. I would say yours probably isn't a lot different than Plumcake. I would almost dedicate one pipe to it, that is if you like it. I really like Plumcake and will always smoke it. So I have one pipe for it. It leaves a huge ghost.

Re: OK Guys, I need some lessons here.

And when you find something you really like you'll probably dedicate a pipe just to it. although you don't have to.
For example dunhill royal yacht is one of my favs and i have dedicated a brebbia lovat just to it. Did i have to no, but do i get a great smoke and the overpowering taste of just it. YES!
