Cob Pipe Question

This is going to sound really dumb but here goes. This is all pretty new to me so please be kind. Is there such a thing as a serious pipe smoker who smokes nothing but corn cob pipes? (I've been smoking a pipe for a few months now and I really love it. I've been thru the whole gambit of tobacco products from Copenhagen snuff to camels to cigars and now pipes. I really love the strong English pipe tobacco so this is where I feel I belong. I think I'll be a pipe smoker forever.) I love the whole cob pipe thing. When they get beat up you just throw them out and buy a new one and from what I can tell they smoke very well. Real pipes seem to be too much to take care of and the do's and don't s are to many. So can I just continue to smoke out of cob pipes and still be considered a serious pipe smoker, or do I have to at some point get a real pipe? thanks guys.

To answer your question, ..... "Is there such a thing as a serious pipe smoker who smokes nothing but corn cob pipes?" ..... Yes. There are websites and sections of other boards that cater to nothing but cob pipe smokers.

Myself, I smoke my MM cobs about 19 out of 20 bowls.

Re: Cob Pipe Question

Pipe smoking is about having a satisfying smoke anyway it pleases yourself, or anyway that is affordable to your pocket.
Some folks love cobs, some love meerschaum pipes, some love briar, some love them all, and all is good. Just as some enjoy aromatics and others don't and some like latakia and others don't.

Anyway, cobs are unanismously accepted as (probably) the best pipes to smoke burley blends and a great option to test different tobaccos.

Re: Cob Pipe Question

Cobs are just fine, and if that's the only type o' pipe you ever smoke, you're still getting a ton of enjoyment.

If you do find a nice, reliable mid-range briar that you like the looks of, like a Stanwell, Savinelli, Peterson, etc, don't hesitate to get one, though. It's nothing too complicated, and a broken in briar is a rewarding smoke.

I have never smoked a corn cob and you all have peaked my interest. I'll have to give one a try. Thanks!

That is what it's all about. I love Carter Hall in a cob, very satisfying.

Re: Cob Pipe Question

I've gotta tell ya, John, at least for me, English blends are much better in a cob than in a briar. If I wasn't more into straight Virginias, I just might take the same approach.

Re: Cob Pipe Question

I just bought two cobs last night and dedicated one to VA's and one to english blends. They are my first pipes since getting back into the pipe and I love these pipes compared to the briars I had before. So easy and worry free plus they smoke pretty amazing. I smoked 4 bowls last night and 3 were out of the same pipe...couldn't really do that with a briar.

Re: Cob Pipe Question

My wife keeps asking me why I buy so many cobs all the time when I've got all those expensive ones laying around. Some tobaccos just plain taste better out of a cob. It's all about what you enjoy, not what others think of your choices. Given my love of burleys I could be happy with nothing but cobs the rest of my life.

Re: Cob Pipe Question

From what I have seen so far, no pipe smoker will kook down upon you for it. You might have a slightly higher rate of funny looks from the general public smoking a cob as opposed to a briar. But to echo the sentiment of everyone else, if it make you happy, definitely continue.

My uncle was a longtime pipe smoker and, in my memory, he went 90% cob/burley although he owned many briar pipes. He was serious about pipe smoking and he loved a cob. A Formula Vee automobile is a plenty real enough racer and a cob is a real enough pipe for serious pipesmokers.

Many seasoned smokers see cobs as optimized for aromatics, burley and virginia tobaccos; they are not usually recognized as good english or oriental smokers.

Re: Cob Pipe Question

I've been smoking pipes for many years and i can tell you honestly that I hold cobs in the highest regard. They are an EXCELLENT smoke and very enjoyable. I've always got a few cobs in my rack and i smoke them regularly and never feel like i'm stooping down a notch to grab a cob out of the rack.

If suddenly cobs were the only pipes available for smoking I'd not feel the least bit upset.
