Anyone With a Rope in Regular Rotation?
There is something about a rope tobak that makes me want to try it! Something dark and strong! So, I was wondering if anyone had opinions on ropes they like or have one in regular rotation. I want to get an order shipped up north here so I wanna hedge my bet with some opinions on what folk like.
Thanks!

I traded for a tin of Black XX, but haven't gone any farther than poking it with a sharp stick as of yet...

It smells kind of like FVF but milder. I'll try to get to a bowl soon and report!

Re: Anyone With a Rope in Regular Rotation?
Okay, I'm smoking a bowl right now. Or at least started a bowl. I don't think I'll be finishing the bowl. Frankly, it doesn't just look like dog poop...

Dang, I was hoping you'd like that stuff. It doesn't do much for me either. I would like to try the Brown #4 rope sometime though.

Re: Anyone With a Rope in Regular Rotation?
If we ever have a herf (pipe-smoking get together), it'll be easy to tell who has ropes in their regular rotation. Their skin will be green, their eyes will be red, and they won't be able to taste anything... plus they'll walk around babbling "humina humina humina humina humina...."
There's a reason men didn't live long during the days that this was the only tobacco around. Three guesses, and the first two don't count! ![]() It's cool to think nostalgically but I'd like to simply imagine rather than participate. |

Re: Anyone With a Rope in Regular Rotation?
I've had a bowl from a "link" of SG rope a brother here had sent me as a sample. I still have the rest ... I'm afraid to smoke it again. Strong sheet, understatement.

Re: Anyone With a Rope in Regular Rotation?
I recently purchased some Black Irish Twist, although not in regular rotation, I do enjoy it with a pint of beer on weekends.
I mix it with some sunset breeze or any other dried aromatics that sit in my house heglected, I stuff it into a cob with a savinelli 6.5mm filter inserted, so it is not too strong, but fully enjoyable. Good stuff indeed, pure tobacco taste! Last edited by Pypkius; 10-28-2009 at 11:24 AM.. |

Re: Anyone With a Rope in Regular Rotation?
I smoked quite a bit of it a year or two ago. I tried Gawith,Hoggarth Sweet Rum Twist, Black Cherry and Brown Bogie. I also had a sample of Black Irish Twist and couple cans of SG Brown Rope #4. The best thing about these ropes is the room note which I think smells really nice. On the down side I find the nicotene too strong; smoking this too much makes my mouth taste and feel like cardboard and its also difficult to enjoy a more mellow smoke later on in the day. It seems the tobacco is pretty oily even when its dried to a crisp and for the life of me I can't get it to smoke cool no matter what I try. I've stil got about 1 1/2 pounds so I guess I'll see how it smokes with age somewhere down the road. I do find it pretty good as a condiment tobacco if used with the right blend.

Re: Anyone With a Rope in Regular Rotation?
i've currently got a tin of Brown Rope *4 and Black XX Rope open.
was smoking the brown rope about once every other day until i got a cold... i like it, but i also like GH&Co Dark Flake unscented and Brown Twist Sliced (which is brown bogie cut up into curlies). the Black XX rope is cased with something, and i haven't given it a fiar chance as of yet, it's still pretty moist and i haven't cut it up yet to dry/smoke. there are a number of ropes made by GH&Co that are really nice in flavor and room note. they'll have names that would make you think they're just going to be a total aromatic goop-fest, but you only get an initial flavor of "rum" or "irish" or whatever, for about the first 2-3 minutes of the smoke. it then fades away and your left with a nice strong tobacco flavor (and a great room note). i'd give it a twirl, Jeff. just make sure you have a pipe that you won't mind getting ghosted.
