Had a funny pipe-guy moment today

I was taking care of some business at a customer's store. On the way there I was working on a bowl of VA/per while wearing one of those light fleece jackets. While I was rooting around in their computer messing with the inventory system one of the employees walked by, stopped , sniffed, and made a face while looking at me. Incredulous they asked very loudly, "Who's smoking in here?", and began to walk away. Before she could get 10 feet, the general manager jumps in and says to her, "Dave smokes a pipe. He smokes NICE pipes, filled with very high quality tobaccos. He is not smoking in here. But your cheap perfume is ruining the aroma he brought in with him, so keep walking." I just made this face. Who knew I had found a fan? All this time I have been worried about showing up places and being overly stinky when smoking non-aro tobacs!

Re: Had a funny pipe-guy moment today

Great story. Nothing like the smell of a pipe. I love the smell of a pot bellied wood burning stove also. It brings me back to simpler times.

I was on the bench today smoking my usual cigar, and a guy sits down at the next bench about 25 meters away. I keep on smoking my cigar, and the first few times, I took a puff he would start coughing like crazy. I ignored him. And at least half the time I puffed he would immediadely start to cough.

I said another one of these jokers. And the wind was blowing south west, and he was sitting due north of me, with about a 3 knot wind, when it blew.

So a half hour later, I see him walk away and I was blown away. He is dragging on a cigarette. So the cigarette, and the cars and trucks passing buy on the road in front of us on these particular benches did not bother him, but a cigar far away, would instantly generate coughs.

Thats all I have to say on this matter, Jerry

Great pipe story.

I always used my standard reply when someone says my pipes stink. I tell them "It won't smell so bad if you're standing over there" and I point to a spot a few hundred feet away.

Bump for the Gen. Mgr.

I got a (head turns) "Yummmmm. My dad used to smoke a pipe and it always smelled so interesting. I'll bet the flavors were great. Miss that." from a lady at the store the other day. It happens. Mostly they say I remind them of their grandfather, though. Gee how that stings.

Re: Had a funny pipe-guy moment today

I was smokin my cob yesterday while waiting for the trolley and an old woman probably late 60s early 70s walks by and says goodmorning...I really like your pipe. She goes on to say she used to smoke a pipe and smoked all the time when she was a kid. I thought that was pretty cool. I was smoking EMP which I now smoke inside too cause my girl likes the smell...Bonus!

I have a system. If a pretty girl chats me up I don't go right into family history. Take Mrs. Moo for example. We've been married 13 years and she still hasn't introduced me to the folks. Fewer birthday presents to buy... less hassle about where to go on holidays... So what's to complain?

Sorry about this misguided claptrap, Davetopay. dmkerr started it and I am too weak to resist his will.

I went outside for a smoke at work one day, to the picnic table that is our "designated smoking area". Some woman was sitting there with her kid, I pulled out my pipe, and got the frosty "do you have to smoke that here?" I smiled and said "Yes, it's the f*****g smoking area."

Okay, I guess it's not that funny, and shows my lack of tact and wit, but it sure felt good...

Re: Had a funny pipe-guy moment today

Sweet moment. Kind of Ultra Super Duper Sweet actually.

***

When it comes to Public Places, I do my best to apply whatever sensible approach the situation calls for. If I am moving on a side-walk, I think I have a right to smoke as I walk. If I am sitting down next to many tables with many people, I think I will refrain out of courtesy.

By the way, often times it is easier to light up in public when there are less people around. There is some type of public social conscience which almost demands that someone 'Stand Up' for those around them, when there are many people there. However if there is that same 1 person, they are less likely to do that and thus give the pipe smoke a chance.

Whatever is in between is fair game and anytime somebody even tries to say or do something, I do my best not to say anything and just look at them and I try to look right through them while focusing on minimizing my own thoughts that are thinking 'Pathetic' , 'Stupid', 'Dumb' etc...

Its basically better not to stoop to their level and have them do everything, all on their own. The excessive coughing, the hypocritical behavior, everything. Just let them participate in that moment as much as they want and we ignore them and just continue enjoying and puffing on our pipes.

I have even had people next to my car, in their car, roll down their windows as if the smoke was Radioactive. Hilarious. It would take about 1,000 pipes, all smoking at once, to come close to equaling the negative health effects of ONE CAR's exhaust.
