My Uncle's Pipes :-)
My Uncle died in 1993 and my mother just gave me his collection to frame in a shadow box, which I did. However, I had such a fun time wiping them down, examining them, holding them, admiring the craftsmanship and skill, it got me fired-up about digging-out my old pipe that I bought when I was 19, (trying to emulate my Uncle). I smoked my Comoy Classic for almost 2 years before my wife talked me out of it. Haven't smoked since...until now!
I dug out my Comoy leather pouch, Japanese-made pipe tool, humidor, lighter, single pipe stand, and my wonderfully preserved Comoy. I even have several sampler tins of unopened tobacco that has sat since around 1987? Went to my local tobacconist and got 1/4 lb of 2 different aromatics. Boy was I SHOCKED at the $40 ring-up at the register for half a pound of tobacco! I think I used to buy by the pound for around $10 maybe back in 1985 or 1986. Anyway, I'm hooked again and have no idea how I've missed my pipe for 22 years. Back to my Uncle's pipes. Since I was a young boy in the 1970s I never knew anything about his pipes other than he always had one. He was a navigator in the Merchant Marines and sailed all over the world and constantly added to his collection. I've since done some checking and learned that he had a really good eye for a good pipe :-) I have now taken the pipes out of the shadowbox I just assembled and will be cleaning them and placing them in a proper display case so I can smoke the nicer ones as well. Here's what he has: (all pipes from 1970s to 1980s) 1) Peterson's Mark Twain, (Republic of Ireland, no number) 2) Viggo Neilsen's hand finished, made in Dublin, (INCREDIBLE pipe) 3) Peterson's Emerald 4) Comoy's Consort, England 5) Erica (looks like a Peterson but can't tell) 6) K&P Peterson's 7) Pipe Pub, France, 1985 I tried posting pictures but I have to have 30 posts before posting photos or links to photos - so maybe soon I can show them off! This is a great resource and great forum. I look forward to many visits here! Jeff, Austin, Tx |

Re: My Uncle's Pipes :-)
Wow that's great to have your uncles pipes like that. Sentimental value and well aged to boot. Smoke and enjoy them, I'm sure he'd be honored to have you enjoy them.
Definitely share some pics when you're able.

Re: My Uncle's Pipes :-)
haha Well - back in 1985 I would smoke in the house (didn't everyone back then?) and wasn't willing to step outside to smoke all the time! This time, however, I'm enjoying my pipe outside several times a day :-)

Old Enough To Know Better
|
Re: My Uncle's Pipes :-)
I had an uncle and grandfather (I was too young to know) who were both pipe smokers. According to my kids (who would vacation with my folks and visit my uncle), he smoked all the time and could have quite possibly had a collection of pipes. Unfortunately, I will never know as other family members picked through all his belongings with a fine tooth comb.
That's ok, I don't feel I had any "right" to them anyway as he and I were merely "acquaintance family". My kids knew him better than I did. |
