I have a serious problem.....#2

I was again the only bidder on this Kaywoodie Super Grain 15. I did some digging and I came up with a manufacture date around the 1950s. A little ruff but not too bad for $9 with free shipping.

Doesn't it bother you that since it was manufactured in the 1950s you have no idea how many people have smoked it? (a few decades of spittle...)

Do you bring your own silverware when you eat at a restaurant?

No, but you usually don't put a pipe in the dishwasher.

(I know I would clean it obsessively before using it, since it is a great looking pipe, after all)

No, but if I ask for a straw, it had better be wrapped.

Some ebay sellers thoroughly clean pipes.
I have received a few looking like a new pipe.
It is pretty simple to clean and disinfect a mouth piece.

Very true. I just got an estate Peterson Kildare 999. When I tried to give it a thorough clean I could find anything to be cleaned off. Pipe cleaners (with solvent) went through without finding a trace of tar. I was most impressed, but I still disinfected the mouth piece.

It's a lovely pipe though I think it will take a few more bowls of Irish Flake to chase away the ghost of something aromatic!
