Pipe and beer

Hello,

As you may know i'm a relatively new pipe smoker, I've been smoking several of mac barrens aromatic tobaccos (plum cake, honey and chocolate, vanilla cream)

However I am not a new Guiness drinker I am not really a fan of other beers but I have always liked Guiness as long as it doesnt come from a bottle.

What I have noticed is, sense I started smoking a pipe Guiness has tasted even better(hard to believe), seems to no longer have the slightly bitter after taste but turned mildly sweeter and more delicious. It does not matter if i am smoking the pipe at the same time as drinking, it seems to be more of a consistent change in the flavor of the brew.

Has anybody else noticed this? Is it just the mac barren tobaccos that is having the effect on my brew? Its very curious.

Re: Pipe and beer

Are you smoking a Peterson? That might have the right effect when you're drinking Guinness!

Re: Pipe and beer

i wish did have a peterson, its probably one of the next few pipes on my list to get

I have a lorenzo s***re pipe, not sure the name of this one its rubbed out, spitfire maybe?, i picked it up at the local tobacconist. To be honest i dont like this one very much its gurgles every time you smoke it no matter what you do.

I recently bought a savenilli from frenchies (right before he retired). Smokes much better than my lorenzo never gurgles and doesnt get no where near as hot.

and a corn cob which is better than the lorenzo i paid $60 for.

I probably would have ordered a peterson from frenchy had he not retired, but sense he did, i am on the look out for a new source with as good of a reputation

Re: Pipe and beer

I believe that pipe smoking helps to refine your pallette. I found that after I started to smoke a pipe I could pick up flavors in cigars I never noticed before. I also enjoy cigars more now in general.

That could be why your Guinness tastes better, but for the record Guinness always tastes great!

I think I know what you mean, I recently had some sierra nevada Pale Ale after a bowl of Captain Black and noticed the pale ale to have an almost sprite-ish or apple-ish flavor to it...sort of strange, but not bad by any means

Sierra Nevada If you like that, there is another Pale called Rogue Dead Guy Ale, which I also loved. Hard to find though.

I've never heard of that, I'll have to look into it. I'm really a fan of St. Pauly girl, Firestone DBA, and of course you can never go wrong with the Guinness. (their 250th anniversary stout was particularly good) The sierra nevada is the first beer I ever had with a pipe. Much MUCH better than keystone light...

Heheh...I said not to get me started......lol

My inner beer nerd is fighting my better judgement to tell yoy that Dead Guy is in fact classified as an "Alt Bier" style of ale. Which is German for "old beer".

If you like big smoky latakia blends, find a beer shop which handles Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier. It is a German smoked beer from Bamburg. A rather INTENSE experience for the inexperienced.

Re: Pipe and beer

I love twists and balkans with beer, however my palate has been getting too upset by the combination recently, so it will either be beer or pipe
I tend to lean towards pipe

Funny...I've been eyeing the stuff for months now at the liquor store just down the street. I'll be sure to give it a shot.

You are a man after my own heart! Only 2 months until Hopslam drops!

In the meantime, I am going to be diving into the winter warmer ales...Great Divide Hibernation, Anderson Valley Winter Solstice, Bell's Best Brown, Avery Old Jubilation, He'Brew Jewbilation....sooooo many tasty malt bombs available right now!
