Perique Blends

Ok, now I have a question. I have tried two different Perique blends now, and they taste like I am smoking tobacco with a air freshener in it. One blend was MacBaren Acadian Perique, and the other was GL Pease Barbary Coast. Is this just me. My preferred tobaccy is English/Latakia blends so far. I like tobacco with a nutty flavor too, not fruits.

I can see where you pick up the plums with vinegar. I really don't like it so far while smoking it. I do like the taste in my mouth after though. Does it get toned down with age.

Re: Perique Blends

I've never had those two, but I really like perique and Fillmore is my favorite. Perique behaves differently depending on how much is in the blend. Fillmore is pretty loaded with it, so I get a lot of stewed fruit and big black pepper notes coming through all the great quality VA flavors. Escudo is pretty much everyone else's favorite va/per, and while I do enjoy it, I find it not at all bold and almost too refined.

GLP BC has burley and brandy added, not a true "VaPer". The new MacB Acadian Perique that I've been ploughing through is a mish-mash of many types of leaf (see my review in the, where else, review section), also not a true "VaPer".

For the REAL deal, try Escudo
GLP Fillmore, another excellent specimen. Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake, great stuff. SG St.James Flake, awesome weed.

Perique, at least in the mentioned blends, tends to be sweet and tangy (peppermint like). When smoked cool. Push it too hard, and it goes spicy. Sometimes its fun to push it and then hold back, great stuff!
