I assume it has to do with the sizing of a pipe/bowl. But does it have a standard measure? I am picturing it like the gauges of shotguns.

(Dunhill standard) Group 5 means a chamber bigger and taller than group 4 far as I can tell. A system from the 1950s; nobody ever shows THEE Dunhill master chart defining what dimensions fall into what group. There are catalogs that show pipe dimensions and group number but, so far, the master diagram has eluded me. I hope some Dunhill buff can tell more.

I have a pair of group 2s. Man, they're small. About 3 cm across the top of the bowl and 4 tall. Having thought a group 2 was a larger pipe I was a little disappointed, birth year or not.

Re: Group 4, 5....what's this all mean?

I don't recall if this was fact or just a story of some kind or even an educated guess, but I do recall reading, many years ago, maybe 8, even 10 years ago in an issue of the Pipe Smokers Ephemeris that the rule of thumb on the Dunhill Group Sizes was that a Group 1 when properly filled will hold 1 gram of a ribbon cut tobacco, a Group 2 will hold 2 grams of a ribbon cut tobacco and so on, with a group 6 holding 6 grams of a ribbon cut tobacco.

For what it's worth, I do recall reading that explanation.
