Does this tobacco sound familiar to you?

I'm curious about a certain tobacco I remember trying back in the seventies, but I don't even know for sure who made it, what it was, or what it was called. And for sure, of course, don't know if it is still available.

The tobacco was very, very light, and I'm almost positive it was burley. The cut was really odd to me then, it was almost like a tin packed to the brim with a bunch of cork pieces. The tin was round, and my memory says it was MacBaren, but you know how reliable memory can be, particularly after over thirty years away from the briar. Does this trigger any memories?

Were the cork pieces round? Sounds like Mac Baren's Royal Twist to me. It's now called Roll Cake. I'm not sure if it's exactly the same as the old Royal Twist but they did change the name from RT to RC. Hmm... did you mean the tobacco was light in color or flavor? My memory of RT was that it was kind of light brown with medium brown thrown in as far as color.

It sounds to me like some kind of cube cut burley.

The local B&M carried a Lane Ltd. blend that was a cube cut burley, and indeed it did look like someone had taken a corkboard and diced it up.

I haven't seen a baccy like this since back then ('80's).

This is exactly what I was thinking. I do believe my local b/m has some of this on the bulk bar. I have always wanted to try it out.

Re: Does this tobacco sound familiar to you?

A quick Google search brought up a hit for a cube cut burley from Cornell & Diehl. Given their high standards and quality baccys, it would prolly be worth giving a try!

My recollection is that these cube cut burleys tend to be nutty and slighly sweet (like cashews), and even smell like nuts in the pouch.

They were kind of round, as I remember, but think "packing peanuts"; thats the closest I can get. And it was light in color, sort of an off-white cream color.
