Teak 2 Pipe Wave Rack @ Iwan Ries & Co.

Down the left hand side, there appears to be a line from two separate pieces of wood, but otherwise this thing looks to be carved from a big block. Or no?

It appears to have been cut from a solid block on a CNC bandsaw.

I noticed the seam too, or is it just a dark spot in the grain? Dunno. I don't know much about all that but some wood can be shaped with pressure and heat. I guess it would depend on whether its a solid piece of wood or not.

Looking at it again I'd say its definitely two pieces of wood. Not only is there a seam on the end, there is also one across the top just above the dishes cut out for the bowl to sit in.

Its blocks of wood glued together cut out on a band saw then sanded and finished. Not a very difficult thing to make but you would need bandsaw and a drum sander.

At least steam bending is used quite often for making furniture, but AFAIK, that can only be done so that the pressure is added perpendicular to the grain. If you add pressure parallel to the grain, the wood will very likely split when the moisture evaporates.

I thought that too. Smaller pieces are easier to dry without craking, and also all kinds of pieces left from other uses can be recycled with this method.

+1 - Two blocks of wood glued perpendicular to one another. turned on side and cut out on band saw. Not hard to do with a bandsaw. Not much sanding needed.
