Casual Piping?

From what i can gather from reading various posts/website guides on pipe smoking it seems that when you get a new pipe it needs to be "prepared" by smoking tobacco to build up the cake.
If i start pipe smoking then it is only going to be a casual hobby for me, certainly not soemthing i will do every day.
Is pipe smoking going to be suited to my style of smoking, ie every now and again when i fancy a smoke? it seems its more of a regular thing for most guys here who do it almost daily, or at least a few times a week. OR have i got the wrong end of the stick?

Any comments and advice would be appreciated.

Re: Casual Piping?

You posted on my new Pipe adventure...For me with cigars in the beginning I tried many different sizes shapes Maduro..ect and found what i liked. Then discovered Isoms and went through the same process..also the Code language of the ISOM smoker is fun and adventuresome. For me with Cigars I enjoy the aroma of the cigar more that the taste. So after 25years of smoking cigars I will begin the new adventure with Pipes...I may or may not like it but the journey will be fun either way...As far as how often do I smoke..it goes in stages..around the house once aday sometimes twice. I ride a Harley and if we take a trip when ever we stop I enjoy a small cigar so maybe 4-5 smokes in the day while ridding and an evening gathering after dinner. Now I have to figure out pipes and Harleys..you dont see many Harley riders with Pipes...also going to have to get me a small pipe for those short stops....get me a Few Cobbs for traveling. As far as cost you saw my post on the Ebay Estate pipe $15 I have ordered a free Tobacco sampler..so I am off on my new adventure for cheep....it wont stay cheep but life is short and most people regret the things they did not do in life...So I say jump in my friend enjoy a pipe or just the friends you make while smoking one!!

Re: Casual Piping?

I only get a pipe about once a week. Keeps costs down. There is a ton of info on how to smoke a pipe, but I have found that to be stressful and ruins the smoke. The more you smoke the more you will learn. You will find what you like/dont like about certain pipes. Find certain blends you enjoy. And start learning at your own pace.

Now pm me your addy and I will get you started!!!!

Not neccessarily, but a pipe that's brand spnking new will smoke differently than a pipe that's been used to the point where it's smoking the way you like with a blend you enjoy. There are certainly physical characteristics for this change, but some of it is acquiring a familiarity with the individual pipes preferences and how it burns the tobacco you're putting into it. If i start pipe smoking then it is only going to be a casual hobby for me, certainly not something i will do every day.

Sure...why not? it seems its more of a regular thing for most guys here who do it almost daily, or at least a few times a week. OR have i got the wrong end of the stick? Well...maybe, but not about the pipe stuff.

If ya wanna do it... then do it. There's a bit of a learning curve, but it's a continuing process even for guys who've been smoking for years.

Re: Casual Piping?

hi caskwith, it really does not take long to build up a'cake' inthe bowl of your pipe infact the slower the process the sweeter and cooler the smoke inthe end. also alot of good pipes these days have a pre lined bowl to make it easier.

Re: Casual Piping?

One thing good about a pipe, you can let it sit for a long time between smokes and it won't hurt a thing. If you are smoking a flavored tobacco it's a good idea to take a pipe tool and loosen the remnants and dump them before putting the pipe away. And please don't knock the rim of the bowl on anything to loosen the dottle (remnants).
