Smoke or stick in display cabinet?

My wife has bought me a Peterson Pipe of the Year 2006 to mark my half century - later this month - on this wonderful planet of ours.

smoke-stick-display-cabinet-pipe.jpg

It's a nice looking pipe..the trouble is...I don't know whether to smoke it or put it in a display cabinet? Is it something that unsmoked will increase in value over time or is it a pipe that should be enjoyed for the purpose it was made, i.e. with my favourite tabac?

What do you reckon guys?

Smoke it and enjoy! Let somebody else display it. (After you've gone to meet your maker )

Thumbs up Re: Smoke or stick in display cabinet?

Definetly smoke it. Only the rarest of pipes become valuable over time and even then the value of a pipe that has been smoked and well taken care of, is not much less, than the same pipe, unsmoked!

Petersons are very good, quality, machine made pipes. They are not hand made. They usually, do not appreciate in value, over time. They are great smoking pipes. I have several and can attest to that.

Re: Smoke or stick in display cabinet?

Thanks Guys. Sounds like excellent advice to me! It looks like I'll be putting the pipe to good use...I'll let you know how it smokes at a later date. Just have to decide what tobacco to use to break it in....sigh...decisions, decisions!

Re: Smoke or stick in display cabinet?

greetings I.B. must agree with everyone else -smoke it.
if i can just give you a little bit of my wisdom as a pipesmoker of 30 years,
a lot of people start of with an aromatic baccy, which is fine but i found then and still do today it burns too hot and it may put you off for good. try a mid strength english blend. can't recommend a brand because i've smoked the same one for years and haven't found anything better yet, but i' ve always willing to give another blend ago. thats some of the enjoyment of a pipe trying out diffrent baccys.

Hi Watson,

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of trying Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe or something similar. Would be interested to know what the baccy is that you've been smoking?

Re: Smoke or stick in display cabinet?

Dunhills early morning pipe is a great starter. good choice.

my fill is (and it's really boring) is Condor original, dark and strong, also its the only baccy i can smell when i'm smoking it.

cheers.

Condor gets some rave reviews at tobaccoreviews.com and the local newsagent sells the stuff too. But I reckon it'd be too strong for me at the moment......mild to medium is about my limit. Still, a blend to keep in mind for the future.

Cheers
