then polished it up a bit and it looks great. wouldn't recommend this on a Dunhill or a really good pipe. but it worked for me. you used to be able to buy stem/ mouthpice cleaner in a tube which was good but i think they have banned it now , some stupid E.U. ruling

I guess it depends how badly oxidised the stem is, if mine are really bad i start with steel wool and work down to p2000 emery paper, if its not to bad i may start with p800 or p1000. after sanding i polish on the buffer with tripoli then use graygates plastic polish to get a high shine, after this i give the stemm a good clean with mild soap and warm water before wiping over with olive oil to nourish it and leave a great glossy sheen.

It all came from practice, i tried various methods on old stems and this emthod came out best, its quite quick it you have the correct equipment and it really makes the stems look nice.

The only stem problem i havnt been able to solve properly yet is filling holes, my current method uses epoxy resin and powdered charcoal, it fills the hole nicely and feels good in your mouth but it wont polish up, italways stays dull due to the small ammount of softness and flexibily you get from the epxoy, this means its great for biting on and has no nasty flavours but it doesnt look perfect. im think about maybe coating it in laquer and polishing that to see if it works.
