Carlton De Luxe Straight Apple?

Hi Guys,

Inspired by the various posts on restoring estate pipes I thought I'd have a go by picking up an old pipe at a local car boot sale. It came in a worn hard leather case - see photos - has a rose gold band and the words Carlton De Luxe on the side. It cost me the equivalent of $6.

My question is this...is Carlton the maker's name or the model? If it is the model name, which pipe maker made it? Any background on the pipe gratefully received.

I have nothing in the way of info regarding your new stable mate, Bob, nor can I locate any references to any brand or style of pipes labeled as such. There may have been a Carlton brand that either faded into history or was bought by a competitor. Any idea of an age on it?

Looks to be quite a nice find, esp. after you've cleaned it up a bit, if that's you inkling. Let us know how it smokes, (the TRUE test of a pipe).

Cheers!

Thanks Scott. The gold band has RAOB engraved onto it and a series of hallmarks - I'll have to invest in a magnifying glass to see what they depict, as they might give a clue as to age. The RAOB - I think - stands for the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes...so I'm guessing the original owner was a member of the Grand Lodge of England. The pipe case is pretty worn.

I'm certainly going to get it cleaned up and restored as far as I can and I'll certainly let you know how it smokes.

your right about RAOB, Bob ( the Buffs) their order, if you are interested started in London in 1822. if on your travels you come across any pipes with U.G.L.E. on please let me know i would be very interested.
cheers.

Greatly appreciated Caskwith. I'm going to do a little research on its history and then intend to try to restore it to as near original as I can. I'd certainly appreciate any help I can get with that as I've never done anything like it before.

Sounds good, if you look around the internet you should find quite a bit of info, theres also some stuff on here too. however i found that alot of the stuff online wasnt really that practical for me so i just experiemented with some old pipes until i found what worked for me. as for tools if you are going to do this seriously you will need a flex-shaft (a dremel will be ok for most jobs, i prefer to use my jewelers flex-shaft cos i get more control) and a buffing wheel for polishing and applying wax.

feel free to pm me with any questions you have.

Should have guessed, but I'm more familiar with the Grand Lodge of Scotland and the Scottish Constitution. Will keep an eye out for you.

Re: Carlton De Luxe Straight Apple?

i experimented with cleaning a mouthpiece with a Brillo pad
then polished it up a bit and it looks great. wouldn't recommend this on a Dunhill or a really good pipe. but it worked for me. you used to be able to buy stem/ mouthpice cleaner in a tube which was good but i think they have banned it now , some stupid E.U. ruling

I was thinking of using something like T-Cut on the mouthpiece to see if that would brighten it up...got to admit a brillo pad sounds a little extreme, but if it works, it works!

NO. definately not T-CUT Bob. even if you get every trace of the stuff off the stem, you will still taste it and it burns ya lips and mouth. i know i've been there
