My First Meerschaum

Hey everyone. After smoking out of my cheapie corncob now for a little while I decided that I liked it enough to invest in some real pipes. Luckily, my Dad had some old Savinelli briars from the 70s and 80s that I've sent off to be restored. In the meantime, I treated myself to a Meer that I found on sale at cupojoes.com. Check the pics! I love it!

Very nice. You'll get a nice cool smoke with a pipe with that much surface area. Just wait until you get it broken in and it starts to color. Beautiful.

Nice pipe. I like the fact that its eloquent but not over done as some meers are. What fuel you going to put to it first?

Thanks! I really like that about it too. I mean, who's going to seriously smoke out of someting like this?!



Anyhow, I've smoked out of it once. I loaded it up with Dunhill A21000 blend. Very delicious blend, but got me a little loopy. It's a pretty mild blend, but I smoked it on an empty stomach. I'm not going to worry about sticking to a particular blend in it. I mean, no drug store tobacco, but I don't smoke enough to designate a pipe to each of my favorate blends.

I think I might have a bowl later of either CAO's Midnight Ride or a local blend called "Guilford Delight". It kicks ass.

I love the pipe! It's a beaut. Just one question...I read somewhere that you can't hold a Meerschaum by the bowl as you smoke it. Is that right? If so...how the hell do you hold it???????

Thanks a bunch Bob! Some say that you should only hold a Meer by the shank as it wipes off the wax coating of the bowel as it gets hot. Others say you should only hold it by the shank for the first 10 bowlfulls or so. Others say that it's fine to hold it by the bowl as long as you have clean hands.

Personally, I just gently hold the bowl towards the bottom and make sure my hands are clean. I believe that even if a lof of the wax does come off, you can purchase it seperately and rub some on.
