You'll need less lung power if you turn your pipe to a 45 deg. angle and light from the side (with Zippo) instead of the top.
It's like magic or something...

Re: Pipe Lighting?

I normally use matches, but this Rochester wind is killer, and the building I live in sits at the end of a "wind tunnel" formed of about 4 or 5 dorms end to end. Thusly, I usually use a butane lighter, to a limited extent.

Re: Pipe Lighting?

Check Ebay and do a search for pipe +lighter +colibri or just pipe +lighter and you'll find a few decent and relatively inexpensive pipe lighters, Colibri and otherwise...I have a Colibri Connaught...I also have a Nibo Old Boy...they both work fine...

Re: Pipe Lighting?

I've used someones zippo with the pipe attachment and I must say i really liked it. Nice big zippo wind resistant flame, aided in its direction to get it where you need it. Also love the little pipe logo thing in the corner.

In all reality though, i'm not a huge fan of Zippos, and i don't think i'd buy one. They're pretty to look at and they have a big easy to use flame, but a) for the cost (20-30 on average), the hinge is a piece of junk. i have a $15 Eddy bauer jet that has a tightly spring loaded hinge with absolutely no play or flex in it. b) the chemical flavor. just the nature of those types w/out cleaner burning fuel .havn't tried their new fuel however. c) the life of the flints. d) the low capacity of fuel.

7 times out of 10, when we're out and someone asks so-and-so to use their zippo, the response is "eh i'm outa fluid/flint i gotta go fill up/replace when i get home"

i'd love to find a lighter w/the low mantainance and sturdiness of my eddie bauer, and the big flame and pipe insert of a zippo for a reasonable price.

Re: Pipe Lighting?

A minor hijack regarding Zippo:
There is a lifetime (of the lighter, not the owner) guarantee. I've had several repairs done on my collection, most of which were used when I bought them. I pay the cost to ship it to Bradford, PA. They always send a new insert and have even replaced lost emblems (like the top half of the Marlboro Man on a bucking bronc).
You have the option at most dealers to get the pipe insert with any new Zippo insted of the normal cigarette insert.
I have a couple of extra inserts if anyone is interested you can PM me.

Re: Pipe Lighting?

I use matches or my zippo pipe lighter. Never had any chemical taste, usually let it burn for 5 seconds before lighting.

Re: Pipe Lighting?

I prefer to use matches for my initial light, then I follow up with my zippo, sometimes I don't have matches and must use my zippo, so when I do I pack the bowl to just under the top so that I can concentrate the heat better with less effort.

Also, I try to hold my pipes level when lighting, otherwise you get a char mark on the rim on the upper edge, if you constantly light your pipe the same way it gets really bad.

The flame from the Zippo insert will go straight down to the tobacco when you draw in. I don't ever char rims with mine.

Update: all my extra pipe inserts for Zippo have now been spoken for (until I find where I hid the others.)

Enjoy!

Re: Pipe Lighting?

Received the insert from Designwise this week. Very nice, much easier/better than a regular zippo or god forbid a torch. Thanks!!
