Pipe Lighting?

What do you guys use to light your pipes? I currently use matches indoors and a torch outside but i really need to find a fairly windproof alternative as it is damaging the rims of my pipes, any suggestions? ive heard about special pipe lighters but have yet to find one in my local shops, they just stock cigarrette lighters or suggest torches.

Re: Pipe Lighting?

The best I've ever seen/used/owned is the Corona Old Boy--designed as a pipe lighter, has a built-in tamper and scraper, and is incredibly reliable.

Re: Pipe Lighting?

corona old boy lighters work great, but cost upwards of $80-120 US, so roughly 6 lbs (or whatever symbol is used for british currency).

i use a bic, local gas station, for only $0.29. doesn't work very well when the slightest of winds is kicking up. matches if i have any around, and that's what i prefer.

i will be getting a nice "old boy" style lighter here soon, though.

Good point about the Old Boys. They aren't super-cheap. But I know they're available in London--a friend I was with bought one a couple of years ago at Harrod's for less then $100.

Another cheap lighter that works well is the Nibo VIP. If you're going to do a trade with someone for tobacco you can't get there, this would be an easy lighter for someone to order and throw in for you. By the way, if you need a facilitator, just let me know. I'd be happy to help.

Re: Pipe Lighting?

I use cheap bics.....as I think most do. I have heared really good things about the use of Zippos, either with or without the availible pipe lighter insert.

I love matches...the wide, hot flame...the nostalgia...but seldom take the time and effort to reach for one when my BIC is in my pocket.

Nibo makes a knock off but I haven't personally used it.

Re: Pipe Lighting?

I use only matches for lighting my pipe. I was told when I started smoking that the chemicals in a traditional lighter can taint the flavor of your pipe weed.

Re: Pipe Lighting?

I just got a Zippo pipe lighter this last weekend, jury is still out. Seemed very good for relights and the such but not so good for lighting flake. I haven't tried shag cut yet but will tonight.

And by the way the new improved zippo lighter fluid really is improved, i can't taste anything chemical when i pull on a bowl.

Re: Pipe Lighting?

I bought a Nibo, after seeing the price of under $25. What a piece of junk! After three days, it ceased to function. The valve that the cover releases to allow the gas to flow is part of the bracket for the cover. It backed out, and now the valve won't release gas at all. I've consigned it to the landfill.

Its a fine lighter caskwith, i really like how you can walk it around the bowl. That said I'm finding that the false light takes some time to get everything charred even with shag cut( this may be me, i have no lung power) All in all i like it and plan on using it for a long time. Hope that helps

Re: Pipe Lighting?

A friend of mine had a zippo pipe lighter a couple of years back (I assume he still does). I really liked it and thought it a good system. I may look into one, myself.
