Tinned Tobacco

I got three tins of tobacco today from Smokingpipes.com. CC '06, Hal O' The Wynd, McClelland's #27 Virginia, and 8oz of 2015 Va/Per flake. My question is, are these tins as bad about letting the contents dry out as C&D's are? I figured on putting them in mason jars, but frankly, I do like the labels and wanted to retain them. The McClelland's labels are pretty loose, but Rattray's is stuck pretty well (No shoddy craftsmanship here!). What do ya'll think?

Re: Tinned Tobacco

I tend to open one tin at a time if I don't want to jar the baccy.

I have had McClelland tins open before for months and it was still moist.

Hope that helps ya some.

Re: Tinned Tobacco

Most tins would fit inside a quart size WIDE MOUTH mason jar. I don't do this but it could work for you.

Re: Tinned Tobacco

i've never had issues with my Rattrays drying out, but i do understand your concern. seems EVERY GLP/C&D tin i open, it dries out in a matter of days...
same thing for my CAO/Dan tobacco tins.

as far as SG and Rattrays, they seem to stay pretty moist in the tin.

unlike someone else who already replied, i've had a helluva time keeping my McClellands tobaccos moist once opened. although, the exception has been the 1 tin of Royal Cajun that i've opened, like it'll never dry up.

Re: Tinned Tobacco

Thanks for the responses. To clarify, all except for the 2015 are basically in the same type of container, ie, a metal can with a peel off metal lid and a plastic snap on lid. I put the 2015, still bagged in a mason jar for now until I can wash the jar, rub out the tobacco, and seal it. My experience with the "cans" is a tin of GLP "Barbary Coast" (C&D) which was so wet on opening, I thought I'd need a napalm strike to light it! A few days later, it was like 99% of the moisture was gone, leaving a bland nothingness. You would think that in Louisiana nothing would dry out... I think I may jar them, salvage the labels as I can and go from there. I like to switch blends, going from one to another, just as a person doesn't want to eat the same thing everyday.

BTW, IHT, how about changing one of Karloff's eyes to green for the holidays?

Re: Tinned Tobacco

Nothing like a festive golem

I have only opened two tins-the rest of my open stuff came in baggies-which I put into jars asap. I would love to open everything and try it but I don't smoke fast enough and I know it will dry out. I had a can of Frog Morton which was the larger size and I put half of it into a jar and the other half is in the tin. It is still moist after two weeks and I think it will hold up until it is gone. I bought a bunch of the small jars with rubber lids and they hold 2 oz of tobacco easily. After a tin is open for a while-or when I want to move on to something else, these seem the best alternative.

The narrator of the original "Grinch" by Dr. Seuss in the TV cartoon/movie was Karloff. (A bit of seasonal trivia.)

Re: Tinned Tobacco

Quick question which is quasi related to this topic.

Where would be the best place to look locally for jars to seal up some baccy?

Sorry about the semithreadjack...
