Question Carey Pipe

ok i give.....how the hell does this thing work????
i am new to the pipe thing and found a carey magic inch pipe layin around so i figure what the hey.
so i load it up and cant get it lit....screw around with it for half hour or so and still nothing. i tape up the holes on it and it works great but doesnt that make it counter productive????
what am i doing wrong????

Supposed to be some sort of Metering device... I've never seen one in person, so can't speak for using one.

They are cheap enough, are the Carey's any good? Don't know how it works either but have you tried to cover the holes on draw then release afterwards?

I have a few of the Carey pipes.
If you pull the stem off you'll see a tube coming out of the shank,
this tube should have small holes in the side.
You need to get PAPYATES these are paper filters that slide
over this tube. Works pretty good.
