Re: A gifted pipe pic...with a question
Hard to tell from that pic. Looks like cake to me, but it may be a meerschaum lined pipe. Maybe someone with a better eye could chime in.

Re: A gifted pipe pic...with a question
if you have a "flower" icon on your camera, use that and take another photo (that's the macro setting for most digital cameras).
i feel like ray charles, i can't see sh*t in that photo. ![]()

nice carpet, reminds me of what i have in my living room. to me, it just looks like built up cake. you can scrape most of that out with a decent pipe tool.

Re: A gifted pipe pic...with a question
Thats a meer lining for sure, i have just cleaned one today myself. Cleaning is quite simple. Take some #150 sandpaper, cut a small peice and sand out any cake carefully, as you get near to the meer use #400 until the lining is nice and smooth. Meer linings are made up using "tubes" of meerschaum so when you reach the meer you should see the join lines inside. Clean the shank with alcohol as its unlikely yours has a meer lined shank like mine. (if its a screw stem then the shank is meer lined, let me know if it is). The top of the bowl can be sanded lightly with #400 paper to take off any charring, just take it gently. When you have finished sanding, brush out the bowl to remove and dust then lightly dampen a qtip with water and wipe out the bowl, this will remove any meer dust. Now smoke that bad boy and enjoy a cool dry smoke! If you want any more info PM me.

Re: A gifted pipe pic...with a question
in which case just follow my instructions above, the shank can be cleaned as normal with alcohol, just dont put any on the meer in the bowl.

Re: A gifted pipe pic...with a question
Is the meerschaum damaged, or was it just an inconsistent cake? My first meer was an estate pipe, and when I got it, I thought the material was in horrible shape, but after a good cleaning, it turned out to be in great shape.

Re: A gifted pipe pic...with a question
Some chunks missing...and a bit cracked up...but all stuck to the sides and solid for the most part.
