yet, another slope.... thanks alot :(

So, I guess its freefall for me again....

I MADE myself not purchase ANY tobacco products for atleast 1 month.

Man it was tough.. but i made it...
and to celebrate, i went a little crazy...
check it out!

http://www.smokingpipes.com/moreinfo...oduct_ID=26433

I saw it and had to have it.

not to mention a bunch of tobacco...
golden flakes, stonehaven, vanilla cream, chocolate flake..
I gotta find something to dedicate to the new pipe so its perfectly logical!

man my 1st pipe doesnt even have cake on it yet!
speaking of which, i have a few questions about cake development.

Ive been smoking haddo's in my briar, only half bowls for the first 10 or so, im probably at bowl 7 or 8 by now.
When i clean, i clean the stem/shank out well with bristle cleaners and tapered cleaners, every few bowls i run some iso through there.
as for the bowl, i just fold a taper cleaner in half and gently wipe out any ash.
As far as cake development, i dont really see any... i see a little bit of stuff on the walls of the bowl, but its sort of spotty...
is this normal?
am i doing something wrong? or am i just being impatient?

just wonderin how long this usually takes.... i make sure to smoke the bowl all the way down, when im finished theres usually some unsmoked tobacco mixed in with ash, so i just dump that stuff out, if i try to smoke it, i just suck up ash into the stem...

I might be able to help you as I am new to the pipe scene as well. How many bowls have you smoked so far, as my first 3-4 all I saw on the inside was what looked like black burn carbon marks, spotty, uneven, and some baccy stuck to it. (the small pieces) So now I'm reading about the cake and how to break a pipe in, I'm watching the boiling pot so to speak, cause after my 8-10 bowl I was cleaning and WHOA! There it was, right in the bottom of the bowl , a cake! I was so freaking happy. I also remember as I was smoking that particular bowl that the smoke got really cool and tasty at the end. Smoked better then any other time. (I'm breaking mine in with Dunhill London mixture) So, I'd say you just havn't burned it enough yet. As far as the left over tobacco, its normal, called doddle. When you clean the bowl I usually do the same, bent a cleaner in half and lightly swish the inside, spreading the ash and picking up most the big stuff. The rest I leave (heard it promotes the cake, although this I am unsure of).

The cake takes time. I clean out my bowl with q-tips soaked in a little bourbon. I have been assured that the q-tips will not take off the cake.

Re: yet, another slope.... thanks alot :(

So i got the Randy Wiley in today!

Its a fantastic briar, and it didnt break the bank either.
1st thing i noticed is the bowl is HUGE, and shaped like a cone.
The opening is large enough for me to fit my thumb in. The bowl is quite tall, and tapers off as it goes down.
Im only packing 1/4 bowls for the first 10 or so days. then i will move up to 1/2 bowls, 3/4, etc...
Its nice having a large bowl, i think this one packed to the brim would probably smoke for 2 hours or more!

The inside of the bowl is rough and blackened. i think the rough texture will help build cake (my other briar is smoother inside and is taking quite a while to develop cake)

Smoking this bowl is a dream, the large bowl allows for TONS of smoke, and the draw seems like it is made tighter due to the tapered bowl.

The feel of the pipe in the hand is satisfying as it is large and has a nice heft to it. There was no gurgling or moisture during the 1/4 bowl.

My only issue with the pipe is that due to the spiral pattern, it does not want to stay upright when i place it on the table, even if i balence the stem on the ashtray/remote control/whatever. I guess i will have to make/buy a pipe holder.

has anyone here made their own pipe holders before? Im not too crazy about the holders i have seen before (the folded flap of leather or the beanbag types)
does anyone have any links to other, more elegant pipe holders?

I chose esoterica's "stonehaven" to break the pipe in with. It was a blind choice, but from reading descriptions i was hoping i would like it.
Ive definatly found a staple tobacco!
Stonehaven comes in long black/brown flakes, alot like pieces of beef jerky.
The smell is tobacco and deep bitter chocolate.
The flavor is just sublime. The sweet/tangy VA is tempered by Burly leaving a dryer, deeper tobacco flavor. There are several flavors present (moreso than my newbie pallet can detect/describe) but none of them outshine the other.
truly a perfectly balenced smoke.
Stonehaven is something i could smoke all day. its not intrusive, yet deeply satisfying.
It only comes in 8oz bags, but trust me, thats not a problem....
from now on every TAD attack will include a bag of Stonehaven. I plan to start cellaring this tobacco, and next year i can start smoking "aged" Stonehaven.

Unless of course anyone has some aged Stonehaven they would like to part with? Cash, Trade, you name it!
Oh, another question, does anyone know where the date stamp on a bag of stonehaven is?

Ahh, ageing pipe tobacco... and i thought the slope only included pipes. Now i see i have to order my favorite tobaccos every month, that way i build up a large enough stock to smoke only aged supply in the future.

Hello Hyper,

I have 5 Wiley's. All are fine smokers with spacious bowls. Very durable and well made pipes as well. You got a beaut!

I have made my own pipe holders before and have even given one to my father inlaw this past christmas. Its the one thing i can make in the limited space i have for a workshop.

This is one of a pair that i made for myself.

And this is the one i did for my father inlaw. It is a 2 pipe rest.

I currently have 2 holders on the bench. They are abit different to the ones pictured as i'm out of knot burl (using canker cuttings now) and they stand higher. Once i get them closer to done i'll post them and you can take a look at them.

Nice pipe and glad you have found a favorite tobacco, it makes the journey so much better.

Those holders are sexy, gonna have to dig out some of my scraps of wood and make one. I like the idea of the tamper holder. Sry to jack the thread.

Sweet, those holders are nice..
what sort of tools does one need to make something like that?
i suppose some simple files and sandpaper should do right?

Dremel tool, drill, and a saw for the fine stuff. Now and again i'll use a gouge for the rough stuff and a carvers knife is not bad to have either. The right pieces of wood is really the hardest thing to work out.

SO go for it and show us what you can come up with, we'd love to see.
