Question about Amount of Tobacco - Samples

I am new to the pipe scene and just won 3 Dr.Grabows on Ebay. I now need to secure some samples of tobacco and was wondering if 1 oz. is enough to get a decent feel for that particular blend. On average, How many bowls can I expect to get from 1 oz?

I see several samplers over on SmokingPipes and thought this might be the best way to determine what I like. The McClelland Bulk: Bulk Matured Virginias Sampler (7 1oz Samples) looks interesting for 20 bux.

I am by no means an expert in the pipe forum, or the cigar forum for that matter. I think an ounce of several types will give a pretty good idea, and is a great place to start. Just watch that first step.

An ouce of tobacco is definitely enough to give you a feel for the flavor of a particular blend. That should allow you to smoke several bowls before running out. For perspective, my local shop sells their bulk tobacco 2 ounces at a time, which fills a ziploc snack-sized bag.

I found that with 1oz I can get about 15 full packed bowls in my pipe. As it is my first pipe and I am breaking it in, not all the bowls have been full and this is kinda a guess. For the price that sampler sounds like a decent deal. (I am gonna have to look into it myself). You might already know this but I thought I would throw it in here as well. If you smoke an aromatic (flavored) in a pipe, don't smoke another aromatic or english in the same pipe. Unless it is a meer. So to answer your question. Yes 1oz should be enough, however 2 oz will give you a better feel. As I am finishing my first tin (1.5oz I belive, its 50g that I know) I am discovering that I like it more an d more, tasting more flavors in it as well. So enjoy the sampler and smoke through one blend at a time, other wise you will probably just get 'confused by them all. Enjoy, I say go for it. I'm new as well so we'll see what some others have to say.

Wow that's alot of smoke in 1 oz. Okay thanks for the responses everyone. I will be ordering this sampler.

Any other samplers I should look into? I do prefer a full bodied cigar if that helps any -

I started reading this board just yesterday and I already have won 4 estate pipes so this shouldn't be a problem. The slope is slippery here as well I see. Seems much more affordable though.

An ounce is plenty. That's what I usually get here locally till I find one to settle on.

if a 2 oz tin will give most ppl at least 10 bowls, you can figure 5+, depending on the size of the bowl of your pipe. that would be plenty to see if you like it or not - just make sure it's dry enough to smoke, just like cigars, if a pipe tobacco is too wet the flavors are muted a bit (and may smoke harsh).
